Noticed a Hobie outback Mirage for sale at Caspar today for only 800 bucks. Sign said it was only used three times, good condition. Called Danglin who thankfully told me to check the drive well first.  Got excited to buy it, looked it over. Heard a good amount of water inside of it.  Looked closer noticed there was a nice hole in the drive well. Guy named Blake called back and said it worked great and there was nothing wrong with it. Some of you may know him maybe he's even on here.

Either way heads up. Real nice, dude.

No kidding! Double :smt011 :smt011  I was actually going to cancel my dive to drive to the bank and pull out cash.

As always, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

What does patching a drive well entail? If done properly how long can that fix last? Anybody have experience with that?

Worth a patch

I should have taken a picture of it, but it was in a very hard looking place to patch+reinforce. The bow side slot. Not just a crack, but patch. If you want to undertake it be my guest but that's outside of my scope.

My second OB hull, an 06' model, I decided to be proactive and reinforce the drive well prone to the dreaded cracking, (After all, I had just went through finding a crack in my first hull) So I got my hot glue gun, and started to lay beads of hot glue around under and around the area that cracked on me before. I built the up the hot glue until I had a nice pyramid built up around the entire area.  The glue did in fact reinforce the area and I was sure that would help stop (Or at least slow down) any more cracking issues.
:smt009  I was wrong!  Even with the amount of glue I had built up to protect the crack prone areas, one still developed while I was at my first Del Valle fish & chill.
I was surprised that my reinforcement didn't help one bit!  When I got my Hobie supplied patch kit for the drivewell, it was nothing more than and thin fiberglass support and some epoxy.  Pretty much Same thing as I did with my hot glue.  Got that hull replaced with my current 08' outback
The attached picture is of the area of the hull that was cracking.  Now, the molding such that the entire area is now solid.  Before there was a 1/2" gap.  You can see the filler material added.
Can the crack be repaired?  Possibly.  However, that part of the hull is taking a lot of stress from peddling the drive.   One may end up repairing over and over until the hull cannot support the drive anylonger.... :smt012
I doubt Hobie will honor the warranty for that hull now.
I thought I had pictures with me of the reinforcement I did on my last hull.  (I have them somewhere, just not on my portable drive) otherwise I'd have post them again.
