Good info.  Went to the beach the other day and had to help a mother get her boys out of the water.  They were laughing saying how it was pulling them in and mom was yelling for them to get out.  I had a little talk with them about rip currents and along with listening to their mom when she says it time to get out or where to play.

Not sure if it sunk in but I have dove that spot and there is a drop off and serious rip current where they were playing.  I just had a bad feeling and felt like the researchers that if something happened it would have been preventable.

Some good information.  I think it is always very important to look at the water and assess the conditions  before you jump in.  If I had used the 75% odds of the current returning me to shore as absolute I would have probably drowned several times when I was a young surfer/ body surfer in SoCal.  It's important to know the water and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

I got in caught in one of those on a beach vacation in the Philippines.  The RIP was taking me out to sea.  I kept my cool and swam parallel to the beach.  Then swam back in.  Pretty scary.  I will never forget it.

Like the guy said, rips are a dream come true for surfers going out to surf. Lots of kayak fishers are uncertain about getting through the surf to fish.  Rips are the way to go. Usually they are deep channels between the sandbars where the waves aren't breaking. Just a tip for people that didn't know.
