Motor oil grubs or Piece of shrimp.  Sliding egg sinker set up ( Carolina rig)
I'm a light tackle angler on perch.  I use a 10 1/2 noodle pole with a 6lbs test.

this is a good read and gets you started..folks use a longer thin pole and light spinning reel..does not have to be the $$$ though.....

In Humboldt bay we fish perch from the yak.  Fish around rocky points, pilings, piers and other structure that gets a lot of current during tidal swings.  Typical perch bait works. Shrimp and sand crabs are personal favorite.  Often I'll fish same areas people are fishing from shore just get a better position from the kayak.

If you are fishing from a kayak, I would recommend piece of shrimp, sand crabs you will need to find the soft shell on outgoing tide. My setup is a Wally Marshall 9.0 light rod (fly/casting) model with Calcutta 200b. Thanks

What kind of rig are you using from a yak?
I normally use Carolina rig with 2- 3ft of floro and a #8 hook.  But this is from the beach.

Keep in mind that most articles on perch are for the SoCal.  They typically have smaller surf.

No need for floro for surf perch.   They are not line shy.  I do use light line on my reels, typically 10-12 pd test.  Small diameter lines reduces the amount of weight you need.  My leaders tend to be from 4-6 ft and i use 20-30 pd test leader.   Reduces amount of tangles I get plus helps when u catch other things like striped bass.   Long leaders only really work from long poles.

But our surf in my area tends to be bigger than most.  Hence longer rods to keep line from surf.  Also help with casting distances.  Sometimes the fish are way out.

ive started using the Carolina rig but I don't have much success as of yet.  I do like tha Carolina setup with a drift float above the sliding sinkers tho.   I also use a standard sinker on the bottom and about 2' above that I have a twisted dropper loop.  It's simple rig and works in a lot of situations with rockfish and perch.

I went in Humboldt bay yesterday. I was using the Carolina rig with a bead and a 1/2 oz bullet. My daughter used a std 1/2 oz egg sinker. We used shrimp and caught several striped perch. Others were out too, using dropper loops with a 1 oz terminal weight. They caught more fish but we all caught plenty.

You can... But I don't think it would give you any advantage.

These perch mostly feed on sand crabs, so they're looking for areas where the sand gets churned up and the sand crabs get washed from their holes. Look for rips, holes, and pockets of churning, frothy water (i.e. areas you don't want to be in a kayak). They definitely aren't scared of shallow water. Some of the biggest barred perch I've hooked bit right by my feet when I was wading in shin deep water.

And I highly recommend researching cooking methods and recipes BEFORE you bring some home. They turn to inedible mush really easily if not cooked properly...
