I called Navionics and asked for a recommendation on getting more contour details with the Gold Chip that came with my Dragonfly 7.   The rep said get a Navionics Update SD Chip..

Kurious - All this can be yours for the small price of the Navionics ap for your smart phone ($10 I think).

Here's an iPhone screen shot of Duxbury Reef with the newly updated maps.

Pretty fantastic, and well worth the $10. I use this to jot down a few coordinates I'd like to check out, then navigate there with my Lowrance. My iPhone's in a Lifeproof case, too, so I can bust it out in the water if needed.

My buddy P-Sherman has the Updated Chip.  (Kayak to the right).  I was comparing it my regular Gold Chip (left kayak), there is a big difference in the extra amount of detail.

Hello Alex,
Thank you for the tip. I found the navionics app in google store. $9.99. Sweet deal!
How good is the lifeproof case? Touch screen still workable? Solid waterproof? I use samsung Note III, have not found a good waterproof and workable on-the-water case yet.

When I posted my app didn't have the new maps.  I fiddled with it and figured out I had to download them separately, and now my iphone app looks as super sexy as alex's.  Make sure you update your navionics app.

Got it. Thanks!

Any one developing fishfinder apps yet? Preferably Raymarine chirp version or above.  :smt005

As for lifeproof, I had great success with them until I didnt. It was a usa based company with west coast offices and 24/7 support. It is now owned by otterbox and is completely terrible. Indian call center support and the product quality has gone downhill.

Sad they had to go and f up a good thing.

Lifeproof WAS good  +1 on that one!  Fully useable in the case, etc...

As for FF aps for the iPhone or Droid ... yes and no.  A few independent companies are playing with the idea.  Raymarine has a new unit that still requires a head but is displayed on an iPad or iPhone.  Not sure how the market is taking to that as of yet.  Time will tell I guess.  I'm sure others have stuff in works  :smt002

Do I like the idea ... not yet.  The thought of loosing an expensive phone overboard doesn't excite me.  Nor does the lack of screen size unless you go to an iPad mini or something of that nature.  My iPad links up with my Lowrance setup on the boat & doubles as a complete system but I reserve that for the boat & not the kayak.  That has been in play for a few years now.

The Lifeproof isn't perfect, but it was the best option I could find for waterproofing my phone while keeping it's functionality. People say I sound a little muffled on the phone, but I don't really care. I'm not a chatty phone guy. Touch screen works fine with the Lifeproof case.

I don't use my phone often when I'm on the water, but my GF likes it when I check in a time or two during my marathon offshore peddling days. It's also nice to have it in my PFD pocket in case of emergency.

Well said Bill,  losing or damaging an expensive phone is no fun.  I've seen 2 iPhones get trashed when the owners used them on kayak trips.  Both now use large screen fish finders.  Personally my bad eyesight can't see the small details on a phone.
