All,

So I have opened up my 4600CB abu and removed the offending bearing.  No wonder this reel sounded like crap!  Very rusted, but there is more rust in the area where the bearing was seated.

Is it safe to use CLR or some other agent to remove this rust in the reel frame?

What is the accepted method for removing rust from a reel frame.

It was sort of cool to open up the bearing itself, as I have never done this before.  Cool Beans!

I'm really getting into this tinkering thing and can't wait for my supplies to arrive at the end of the coming week.  I am gonna clean and lube and Tani-ize all my reels.

I'm especially stoked to get my 4600CB back in action.  I have a TON of history with this reel and it is in generally good shape.  new bearing (the other bearing is just fine), clean out the old grease, lube it up and it should be good as new.  Even better, it will still have its exterior battle scars but be in perfect working order!  Sweet.

I need some new fishing rods to mount these resurected reels on.

I would just clean out that rust with whatever cleans it out.

what is CLR?

did you check www.mikesreelrepair? I got a tube of 10 ceramic bearings for $50.

packing a ceramic bearing with grease might seem like sacrilege, but I am a kayak fisherman,
not a casting freak. the race is stainless and thus will rust eventually but the ceramic balls and
grease should be a good rust prophylactic.

My spool bearings will never see grease if I can help it.

CLR is a liquid product whos name is an anacronym for Calcium Lime Rust.  It disolves metal deposits.

Right now I only need one bearing so I am ordering it from abu (12.50 ouch!).

As I get more into reel repair I will be more judicious.

Depending on how easily accessible the rust is I use a wire brush that ataches to a drill. I put it in my drill press and let the thing run while I hold the metal to it. Then I polish it up with a product called "Never Dull". It comes in a blue tin can. It is almost like cotton treated with a non toxic cleanser or micro abrasive. You just tear a wad out of the can and polish the metal. Works pretty well.

mol, you need to try casting with grease in your spool bearings. I think you will be pleasantly suprised.

goes 99% as far, less backlashes.

try it!

i order up those bearings 25 at a time.  they come out to $8 each.  let me know next time.  CLR is fine.  just don't leave in contact with the metal too long.   :smt005
