so while boating i sometimes string my catch to the back of the boat and let the fish hang out.  i've never had any real issues, but i've had some birds try to come in and peck the fish.

i would assume that if i bleed the fish (cut gills) it would attract other fish and potentially seal lions (sharks).

not so bad on a boat, but what about kayaks.  i see quite a few videos of yakers with their catch on stringers or spearfishing clips.

i'm questioning because i would assume that a hungry sea lion could potentially cause you to dump should it be that aggressive

has anyone seen, had that or any issues like that happen?

Putting your stringer of fish in the water by your yak is a bad idea.

Up until last August this was my story:  "I never have had a sea lion take a fish from me, and I've never seen it happen on powerboats I've been on."

Then this happened:

Long before that monster. Playing chicken with bull sea lions is easier/safer without free food hanging in the water.

I recovered that video off my dead laptop this weekend. I'll tie a string to remind myself to edit and post it.

In distant past when I was still diving I used my net ab bag for fish, you can clip that and hang it overboard w less worries about mammals

The kind w the hinged opening works for fish, don't know if they still sell those

A furbag removed four fingers from the hand of a friend's friend up in Mendocino county, worth taking them seriously

That video was crazy Eric!

I've seen them come and eyeball fish,  but not do anything about it. Could definitely see a problem if they grab a mouthful of fish on a clip, especially if the clip is part of the mouthful.

Anyone pack heat on the ocean,  just in case? It's legal to do so. A sea lion is potentially as dangerous as any big predator on land. I don't think they're gonna go after you,  but as they get more comfortable around kayaks,  who knows to what extent they'll go to get an easy meal.

Basically the same deal, too many fur bag encounters has also changed my thinking. I now only leave the fish in the water just long enough to bleed out and then in the crate they go. But I understand the potential is still there so I've replaced all  my fish clip lines with heavy duty elastic rope and only connect them to my paddle keeper which is also stretchy. I figure if a FB grabs my stringer I might have enough time to cut the line or poke him in the sniffer with the butt of my rod.  But it's still a risk I take.

Holy Crap! Pretty entertaining video there Eric!
Language was appropriate, and I might have unleashed a few more choice words.
Would slapping the water with a paddle or net drive a furbag away in a situation like that?
I've had some close drive-bys and check-outs but luckily no takers, as soon as I get a check-out I put my stringer in the tank well :smt003

I have had close encounters with sea lions while river fishing for salmon. I will keep my stringer  in the water until I see signs of the fur bag or I start moving locations.

Awesome video Eric. Amazing you got your net back. I hate furbags. I have lost many salmon to furbags and tuna to the tax man. Bottom line, keep your fish on board on the ocean.
