Howdy folks,
Been awhile since I've posted...
I have a Scupper Pro that I use primarily for spearfishing, but also rock cod fishing and a lot of trolling for kokanee up here in Truckee.
I really need a finder, just to see what the bottom looks like, but the transducer has to go through a scupper hole.  Can't be wired and mounted through the hull as that'll prevent me from storing my fins, spearguns, etc.  Also has to be as compact as possible and easy to remove while the boat's upside down on my car.  Price is a big concern as well.  Doesn't have to be fancy.  Not even a color screen.  Just bottom depth and profile.

I have no idea what I'm doing.  Can you guys point me in the right direction as to model, etc?

Thanks,
Ron.

Really comes down to how much you're willing to spend. $150 ? $200 ? $250 ?

I love my Lowrance Elite 4 HDI. The standard sonar shows arches for fish but the downscan shows the bottom and structure in amazing detail. You can overlay both sonar and downscan as well for the best of both worlds. Lots of different ways to configure the view screen to tailor it to your style of fishing. Opt for the 4X model if you don't need the GPS function. Really, I couldn't be happier with mine.

Lowrance makes a removable scupper mount kit for about $35 which would fit your needs, or you can craft your own. I made one for about $12 and it works like a champ.

The Scupper Pro does not have a transducer compatible scupper. So any transducer you install through the scupper will stick out the bottom of the hull, and probably be banged up when dragging your kayak on the beach. If you want to avoid internal installation, you can always hang the transducer over the side using a transducer arm. Install your fishfinder using a Scotty or Ram mount. And use a dry bag to store your battery. That way you can remove the fishfinder, the transducer, and the battery during transportation.

Humminbird also makes a line of portable ff.  Battery goes in the case and the transducer attaches outside the boat with a suction cup.

I have one and it works well.  Available in many different models from basic to fancy FF/GPS/HD models.

There are also universal exterior transducer mounts that consist of a two piece magnet set (one inside the hull and one outside the hull) that would work too.

Wow!  That's a lot of good info!
I already have a Scotty mount where a finder would normally go.  I run my trolling rod there, but if I could mount the finder into the Scotty mount, that'd be perfect.
So, is there a unit with internal batteries in, say, the $150 range that would work?  Then I'd just have to figure out the best transducer mounting system for my needs.
Thanks again,
Ron.

Hey Ron,

No internal battery units that I know of, but I'm sure it's in the works, just makes sense for a smaller units. Scotty does make a mount for the fishfinder so no issues there. Your next decision and the most difficult is where to put the transducer. I've personally done them all, outside the boat on arms and in transducer dedicated areas on the bottom of the haul. I've also done inside with goop/foam and plumbers putty wet mount.

Personally I'm all about the goop and foam method. Set it and forget about it. Plus the foam protects the transducer if you have any loose items bouncing around inside your boat that could possible damage the transducer. Whatever you decide there is a wealth of information on this site to help you out. Good luck.

Hey Mike,
I guess I don't really need a unit with an internal battery.  Shouldn't be a problem to put a battery in a dry bag and stash it someplace.
Mounting the transducer inside the hull though, is a big problem.  Just no way I know of to do that and still be able to slide long stuff like fins and spearguns inside, where I gotta put them.  That's what's stopped me from doing this till now.

Lowrance makes a scupper mount for their transducers.  Easy to install & use.

Hey Bill, I see you're a Lowrance guy.  If I go with the basic, $100 Lowrance unit, can I mount that into my Scotty mount, and what all do I need to either mount the transducer into a scupper hole, or off the side of the boat?
Thanks,
Ron.
