Hobie catamarans are a kick in the pants. I use to sail them (and anything else I could get my hands on) when I lived near the salt. With good weather, big cajones, and no fear, you could go a lot farther than Soquel! In fact, for a really crazy idea, it might be the better than a yak for albacore trolling!

I used to race hobie 16's in the late 70's and 80's. I was fleet 72 commodore one year and fleet champion of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, one year

The 16 is a particularly great boat because it is built with lots of rocker in the hulls to make it god for getting out through surf off the beach. There's nothing like clearing the back breaker in the air!

If you just got the boat used, make sure all the rigging and shackles are stainless steel. I've seen lots of people substitue galvanized and other cheap junk. You need the strength of the stainless  when you are dealing with the strains that gusty wind puts on your sails and rigging.
