I haven't gone sturgeon fishing in a long time and a lot of things have changed since the last time I targeted them. My family and I plan on fishing for them soon (around the south bay) and I want to make sure I'm not missing any regulations.

Here is what I've gathered so far:

- The legal size limit for a white sturgeon is between 40 and 60 inches. You must measure the sturgeon from the nose to the tail fork

- You cannot use a snare to land a sturgeon. However, nets can be used to help assist in landing

- A single point, single shank, barbless hook can only be used for sturgeon fishing

- Once you have decided to retain a sturgeon, it must be immediately tagged. After catching your sturgeon for the day, you must stop fishing. Boat limits do not apply

- Sturgeon over 68 inches in length from nose to tail fork cannot be removed from the water, they must be immediately released

Now, here are some things I've read floating the web but could not find them in the fresh and salt water regulation booklets:

- Leaders must be a minimum of 18" when using 1/2 ounce or more of weight

- The shank of the hook must not exceed 1" from the eye to the throat of the hook

If I'm missing anything, please let me know. The last thing I want is a huge fine  :smt009

Thanks,

John

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
