I don't own a dory, but from looking at them I'd think they would be at a disadvantage when compared to a kayak.  Especially a pedal-driven one like a Hobie.  If a tourney winner beats out all the kayaks via fishing from a dory, rowboat, bathtub, inner tube, or some other slow and cumbersome human-powered vessel, then he deserves mad props because that'd be a helluvan accomplishment.  In this respect, I'd support allowing dories and the like in tournaments.

But on the other hand, adding non-kayaks to kayak fishing tournaments kinda dilutes the "kayak" aspect of the tournament.  Might as well call them "hand-powered floating vessel tournaments".  Which is nowhere near as sexy as saying "kayak tournament"  :smt004.  Ultimately, it should be up to the tourney director's discretion.  I'll roll either way.

Once your buddie finds out how slow he is against A kayak in A tourney I bet he will get one.

I would think a rowing dory would blow the hatches off a yak my man.  I think you should race him.  :smt001

Would be interesting to watch him beach launch as well.  What a yardsale it could be!

dorys are very capable. portuguese fishermen have used them for centuries.surf launch fairly well and are designed for rough seas. fast too...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

For what it's worth there was a guy in TRW4 in a canoe. He seemed to be having a good time and didn't really seem to have much of an advantage or disadvantage. As far as I know no one minded the canoe being part of the tourney.  I have never canoed much but Im guessing they are maybe a safety disadvantage because tippy. I don't know if there's much you can do to right it once swamped.
Anyway from a competition standpoint I doubt there is much for human powered craft that gives you an advantage over a kayak. If there was we would all be out there in whatever was better

I say yes. Why not???

+1 here.       I mean what's the difference.     A pro angler is about as much like a kayak as a row boat.   Same for Nu Canoe which rows better than it paddles.   As long as it's " human powered".           Sailboats ( AI's )  are not human powered.

+1 - and included in AOTY as well :smt001

Bushy: your buddy's dory is good with me too!

I feel that pushing the human powered aspect of fishing vessels is a good thing.

Nice painting by Winslow Homer. There are several major  seascapes by him in the Boston museum of art. Very impressive! All impart a deep feeling of the salt water world and the men of that time making a living upon it. No GPS, fathometers, radios etc and you better head back to the mothership in your dory before the fog sets in.

That's one of my favorites. If someone wants to row out at Albion I will allow it. This might be the last year for Albion. Rumors abounding.

We're getting too big for tournaments. I see the future holding many PM set-up FishNChills.

Yeah except we  don't 'allow' sails to be used in the derbies.

Lot more Yea's then Nays here, but even a couple nays make me reluctant to say "yeah sure."

I'm going surfing with this guy soon, we sill discuss.  (yes I AM going surfing, despite the gut, and the 5 years off)
