Trying to figure out which gopro to get and wondering what people think about the Hero 4 and what accessories are good to have on a kayak? Like remote, battery pack, mounts etc?

Also wondering about silver vs black etc

Thanks

I have an original gopro and a gopro Hero4 Silver.
Both of them were intact in their packaging until I got bored last saturday night and popped open the 4. the original still NIB (few years now) :smt044
soooooo i can't help you with a comparison.

The little time that I did spend with Hero4 indicates some kind of heat issue.  thing gets too warm for my comfort and makes me think its gonna fry.
the app worked good for me.  paired up my phone for remote viewing pretty easily

Battery time is shorter too, more so as the unit heats up. I've read that the silver has the LCD, whereas the black does not.

Sicking with my Hero 2 until it dies.

I use the hero 3...great pic/vid quality.  Battery lasts about 2 hours with frequent off and on cycles while fishing.  32gb micro SD CARD lasts a full day of fishing. I have no complaints.

I have the new 4 black and love it.  I got the backpac battery for it and can leave it on looping mode for about 3 hours.  It keeps recording until I hit the button then it saves the last 5 minutes, or how ever long you set it up for.  I left it on without recording and hit the record button a bunch of times and it lasted for about 5 or 6 hours, plus I was using the wifi remote.

If I turn it off I bet I can shoot video all day long with no battery issues.  Plus it has that instant on and start shooting video or picture mode.

Right now I use the head mount, but plan to make some mounts for the kayak and my float tube.  Plus I need to make a hand held mount for just walking around taking video.

The video quality is off the hook!!
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I have the 3+ Silver and think it is awesome.  :smt007

Plus I need to make a hand held mount for just walking around taking video.

My buddy Sean makes these grips that are really cool as a hand held mount:

I got the Hero 4 silver for xmas and it is my first gopro so im no help with comparisons but so far I like the silver, the lcd backscreen is kinda neat but not that helpful when 5ft up in the air behind me. I do see it being very helpful in future scenerios when trying to frame up a shot. The black can record more frames at a higher resolution but I had never even heard of 4k before. 1080 and 60 frames a second is plenty if not too much for my current needs. here is a video I made day before yesterday sorry for all the fast forward I got a little carried away when editing. :)

I just got the hero 4 silver but haven't used it yet. I got the silver for the LCD and because the black is truly a pro model and way beyond what most hobbyists would ever need/use. The LCD is nice for immediate playback viewing what you shot.

Nope. A little irritated they changed up some things. I'm all for new and better products, as long as they keep it universal for all the money spent on accessories. Sticking with my 3+ Black.

Man this is tougher than I thought it would be!

Way too many choices, silver vs black, different mounts, battery packs, remote etc

And where to put the g d thing. Can't picture myself paddling around w a camera strapped to my head but that's probably the easiestway to control what you want to see

Seems like it's either that or on the end of a pole sticking up from a rod holder

Not out there to take videos but I can think of a few experiences I regret not getting on camera that wouldve been entertaining as hell at dinner parties My diving days are behind me but looking at some of the spearfishing vids brings back that satisfying adrenaline pump of sneaking up on a big fish and popping it in the head

Anyway thanks for the info

Head mount is nice. They come with sticky mounts you can stick anywhere to. Put one on the bow of my kayak and used the remote (only time I ever used that thing). This is a cool angle but best for two GoPros. It can be risky/challenging to undo it on the water to change to a different view.

Honestly white/silver is probably fine unless you're into super HD FPS filming and video editing. I never even use the 4k on my Black, or pictures, or remote… I just have this problem where if i'm shelling out the money I don't want to regret not paying a bit more for something better down the line haha….

I have the same syndrome, I keep thinking go cheap but will probably end up w a black

Remote seems like a good idea and a couple of mount options

Remote is probably good if you're doing the bow mount. Or even the head mount so you can see you battery life, record time etc without taking it off while fishing. I'd tie mine to the grab handle on my Hobie OB.

Some mounts I love are the head strap, and 3- way. You may like the "Sportsmans mount" for mounting to a pole. Cool mount…expensive but i'm a bit ticked off with it. Second dive using it the thing fell off even though I had it on extremely tight and they advertise it for speargun use. Over $70. May work for you since it's not under so much abuse above water.

There was a good review (can't find it) a while back on gizmodo talking about the difference between the silver and the black. The black, according to the spec sheet and the reviewer, is really a camera for professionals or really competent amateurs. The silver, again according to the reviewer, has so much capability that, unless you really want something specific on the black it's more than most amateurs are capable of utilizing. That being said I'm no Go-pro, just my 2 grains of salt.
