Oh man!  Now I'm in trouble!  Don't anyone tell my wife I just bought it.

I was just reading this article;
Introduction To Surf Perching
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=10

and started searching for this reel since it's what Alex said he uses.

Now, who's got a good deal on 10' 6" to 11' 6" ft. ultra light noodle rod?

American Legacy Fishing has a few surf rods for sale. TD-S and Emblem series from Daiwa, IIRC.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

Thanks Krusty I needed to buy this like I need a hole in my head....Realizing I already had 4 holes I went ahead and bought it!
Should be great! The local Sacramento stores do not have them in stock so it's online only if you have no self control like me.

Would this be a good all around reel for someone who doesn't fish a ton. My bro is looking for real and this seems like a good deal.

What rod would you pair with.

Willidru - The Symetre would be a decent all around reel for SF bay (stripers, halibut), light ocean fishing (surf perch, stripers, tossing swimbaits for rockfish, halibut, lings), or heavier freshwater fishing (salmon/steelhead in rivers, stripers, catfish, largemouth bass).

It's a little too much reel for light freshwater fishing for trout, crappie, etc.

Also, if this reel is used in saltwater, it will need to be rinsed and oiled thoroughly after each use. They are great reels, but aren't exactly designed for heavy saltwater use.

You could pair that thing with any spinning rod that has a similar line rating. A decent, inexpensive bomb proof choice for an all around rod would be the 6'9" ugly stick tiger lite spinning rod. You could catch VERY wide variety of fish with that setup.

More than likely the only reel I'll ever buy for pretty much everything I fish for. I have two of those.  :smt006

I can't wait to try this thing out against a fatty salmon.

I really just have one complaint about the Abu Garcia Record, and it's definitely not a game changer. On such a high-$, high quality reel with sturdy aluminum and stainless steel construction, why did they cop out with a chinsy plastic clicker/fish alarm switch? It really seems out of place on such a beautiful reel.

I have the same complaint about the newer 5000 and 6000 series. But my Abu 9000i has a beefy metal clicker.

I've been looking for a lefty conventional reel. That Abu Garcia ambassador record 6801 looks sexy. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I'll have to keep an eye out for a sale.
