I'm looking for a couple food grade IBC totes to try aquaponics.  I've seen some on CL for $100+ but looks like I would need to do some involved cleaning.

Ideally, I'd like totes that held juice or vinegars as I figure those would be easiest to clean.  Oil and syrup base would be a PITA.

Thanks, appreciate all leads.

Not sure if you found any for your setup yet but these look decent.

Just think of these as Albion hot tubs....water might be cold but I'm sure an a-hull will keep you warm.

Oh cool. I found some but were in wine country and not cleaned for about the same price.

Thanks for looking out.

They make great rain water harvesting tanks.

I have been trying to navigate the legalities of aquaponics in california. Tilapia are a no go with out a $750 permit. I am particulary interested in raising australian red claw crayfish due to their large size and lessor canalbism traits. DFG seems to only be interested in larger operations but I am interested in what setups other people have going. I was going to start with a moderate size green house and 3000 gallon setup, which is 10 IBC containers plus grow tanks and runs.

Ive got a few in Soledad and a few more in San Ardo.  They have been used to transport organic fertilizers.

What do you mean by legalities?  I know there are commercial operations.  I pass one on hwy 92 near HMB.

Does that $750 permit allow you to have tilapia in NorCal?  I thought they were a no no except for 5 counties in Socal.  I know that the Salton sea is infested with them but that's a long way.

Wow, 3,000 gal, so you plan on doing it on a commercial scale?  I've seen them for as cheap as $25 but too far from me and the pictures show some nasty gunk in the containers.

Sounds like fun.  I'd love to see how this progresses!

Not commercial. Larger systems are easier to maintain steady water quality and temperature. You need an exotic permit plus your aquaponics license. Since I won't be selling I think I just need the exotic permit for tilapia and the red claws since they will be in closed loop systems.

For anyone else interested, I found a craigslist ad for some nice tanks for larger setups.

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/grd/4965412107.html

If you are interested let me know asap and I can see if a larger purchase will increase my buying power and negotiate a better rate on equipment. I already emailed the guy asking for a price on the two different tanks (round and rectangular). Will update this post when he gets back with initial prices.
