Didn't work well for me, the pellet gun was more efficient, I can vouch, cats do have nine lives, half a tin of pellets to do it!

I have a small terrier that does not like any "intruders" in her lawn. Just don't feed her for a day, and let her sit in the bushes waiting...kitty will cease having 9 lives  :smt044

Scent based repellents, essential oils like thyme or rosemary oil, especially the pepper based ones. Repell for Cats and Dogs granulated is better because it lasts longer would be choice #1

I have several damn cat that dig up my flower bed and poops in it. Makes a big mess and stinks. I pee in a cup and pour it where they make the mess. The scent marks my territory and it works for me. Just have to do it once a week to keep the scent there. Plus you save water by not flushing the toilet.

At least you don't have raccoons ripping up your front yard on a nightly basis like I currently have.   :smt010

I only have this problem when I rinse my fish cleaning table on the lawn.   :smt044

Why are they digging up your lawn?  Looking for worms and grubs?

Yeah, rooting up grubs I think.  I haven't seen them yet, but they are terrorizing all the lawns in the neighborhood.

Leash some mouse traps to stakes and stake them to the ground all over the yard!  :smt003

Yes this does work on most animals.

Didn't work well for me, the pellet gun was more efficient, I can vouch, cats do have nine lives, half a tin of pellets to do it!
No, this is where " Bad Karma" begins.  :smt011

Yup.  My cat was shitting in my neighbor's yard and I was unaware of it.  My neighbor asked me if he could spray my cat with water whenever it was observed in his backyard. I agreed of course, apologized and thanked him for being so considerate.

After 1 weekend of being sprayed with the hose (I helped) every time he went into my neighbor's yard, my cat no longer shits in his backyard.

it is hard to "train a cat where not to shit", but planting cat nip in your yard is a good move too....they come to get some of the good stuff, get it, forget why they are there, then leave. Anything is better than killing it.

Pee where they poop. I've done it plenty of times. Plus it saves water for not having to flush.
Yup, there's a parade of animals in my backyard thanks to the koi pond. The raccoons are the worst though. Sometimes, after a few beers I will go out back and pee a perimeter around the pond. It usually works for a week or so.

Thought about burying rat traps just under the surface

Yep more likely raccoons I go to work every morning at 530 and they're always hanging out in my front yard they don't even flinch when I come out the door. The only way to be sure if its cats is smell it nothing smells like cat shit.
