So, I'm still relatively new to this.  I've been out crabbing in HMB maybe half a dozen times this season.  The conditions on Thanksgiving day were absolutely epic.  Near zero wind and 1-foot swells.  (if that.)  I know that my personal wind limits are below 8 mph, but I don't quite know where my max swell limits are.  So far this year, the biggest I've had to deal with were on November 2nd.  Sadly, I don't remember exactly how big those were.

The reason I'm asking is that the I'd like to go out to HMB this Saturday, but the forecasted swell is around 11 feet.  I don't have a reference for whether or not that is huge compared to what I've already seen.

I actually went out to HMB last Saturday morning with intentions of going out.  But, when the sun came up, I saw white caps breaking over the North Jetty and decided to just go back home.

Where are your personal limits on the wind and waves?

The flatter and calmer the better.
A big swell is doable if there is a good period between swells.
If they start breaking onto your lap its pretty dicey.
Also the fishing can be hard because of your lure bouncing up and down so much.
Another thing is do you have a place to launch and land without getting munched.
If you like to fish, pick the days when its possible without killing yourself.

I use a general rule of adding the swell height to the wind speed. These days I get out a decent amount so that has pushed my preferred tolerance down to a sum of about 15, but again it really depends on the place.

11 foot swell in HMB sounds like a good day to stay ashore to me.

HMB is a little tricky to predict. I've been out on supposedly good wx days and had waves crashing on my lap? 11 feet from the west doesn't seem to fun. I usually don't go out if winds are over 10 and waves over 6.
I can't wait for it to flatten out.  :smt006

Yeah, there were a gazillion things that made it easy to just turn around and go home:

1.  The 'Hellastorm' destroyed the beach.
2.  There were ZERO other kayakers out there on a normally busy Saturday morning.

I was hoping that you guys would say, "Ah, 11-feet is nothing at HMB!"  Oh, well.  It looks like I'm just gonna hop on a party boat on Saturday just to be safe.

BTW, in case you haven't seen it, this is what the beach looked like at the old pier at HMB on Saturday.

With swells of 11 ft. a power boat might not see you in time to avoid a collision.  I personally won't go out if winds are over 10 mph or swells are over 6 ft.

Thanks!  That's some good feedback.  I didn't think about having to worry about powerboats.  I figured that I could just immediately cut left and be out of the way once I got out of the harbor.
