I am in a very specialized field, and I wrote each resume tailored to the specific jobI applied to. Nobody needs to know I worked at taco bell Iin college!  :smt044
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I've been doing contract/consulting work for the last two years, so I've gone through hundreds of iterations of my resume for different positions, and just signed the papers for a permanent gig (goodbye fishing....). I'd be happy to take a look at yours for you. PM me and we can start talking over email.

FWIW we asked for resumes for our dog walker. There's a load of cranks out there- need a simple way to sift through them.

Next door neighbor is a ex-special forces guy who does some sort of project mgmt now. Once you get your resume sorted PM it my way, and i will hand it to him.

We use recruiters to sift the resumes for applicants. I have now been on both sides of our hiring process (as i just changed jobs internally and went through a full external screen first. I hadn't updated my resume in years. Now i've updated both my resume and linkedin profile.
Don't underestimate your online profile. First thing anyone does is search for you online.

This.

A generic resume is great for shotgunning it out there to a whole bunch of jobs and hope something comes back.  If it is a job you really want, make sure you tailor the resume AND cover letter to match what the employer is looking for.  IMHO, the cover letter is often more important than the resume itself. It grabs the attention of the person reviewing the applications.  If their interest is peaked, then they will look at the resume for qualifications.

Don't forget to look at where YOU WOULD like to work and go there, turn in a resume/Application and call back. Let them know what YOU can do for them... The best jobs rarely make it to the paper. Get out there and GET the job you want. They may be struggling with a poor employee and stuck because they need a body (anybody) to fill the position. You may be the answer and you may get the job that WAS NOT THERE...  :smt003 Good luck.
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Hey Vic,
Have you thought about working at Outdoor Pro Shop or Pacific Sportsman or another fishing/hunting shop?
Not related to fishing, but there are some good jobs posted through usajobs.com and your Navy background would potentially give you an advantage. https://www.usajobs.gov/Search?Keyword=&Location=santa+rosa%2C+ca&search=Search&AutoCompleteSelected=false
And I agree that it helps if you tailor your resume & cover letter to include details about the specific job for which you're applying...don't just use the same cover letter & resume for every job.

I do look for spelling/grammar grammatical errors.  There is no excuse for this IMO.  Attention to detail!

For engineering jobs in the south bay (Silicon Valley), I have never ever seen a cover letter except from new college grads.  All cover letter type stuff is squeezed in the first introductory paragraph in the resume.

Seriously? I usually include a CL when I'm looking. I've using the same one for the past 15 years so it's a simple copy+paste  (or the same BS lines with updates).

Yes, seriously.  But this is likely specific to my area of engineering.

I don't get cover letters either.  But then again maybe they're afraid of adding insult to injury.

When in doubt, always send the cover letter.  The recruiter or hiring manager can always ignore it if they so choose, but if they are looking for one and you don't send it, you're SOL.

Wow, good insight to hear about different selection processes.

How do people apply for your open positions? Is it an online form? e-mail?   I can see omitting a cover letter if it is just going to be scanned into a database to be searched for keywords, but if there is a chance a person will be reviewing it I always include a cover letter.

This also means that you shouldn't rely on information that is only in your cover letter.  Make sure important information is covered in your resume as well.

We get applications via email in response to openings posted on our website or other job sites like LinkedIn,  as well as recruiters (the majority of candidates come this way), and internal referrals.
