Sup Bros and Sis,
I am tired of paying too much whenever we eat at shabu shabu, its such simple preparation doesnt require anything special, the only thing I'm missing is meat slicer, I tried buying the $50 kind but it wont cut the meat at the thin way for hot pot, that said can some recommend meat slicer the wont slice my wallet. Up to $200 budget  :smt003

Thanks,

I'll let you have it for $199  :smt002

Have you given thought of buying a mandolin?
They are great for thin slicing.

You sure it wasn't operator error?  :smt044 I got one of the cheapie ones, and I can slice ribeye deli thin.  If you are having trouble you can partially freeze the meat first before slicing to make it easier.

If you put the meet in the freezer for about 10 minutes until it is slightly firm but not hard, you can cut it with a sharp knife very thin.

Like I said, some generic brand, I think it was Deni or something like that.  Don't freeze it all the way through, just enough to firm it up, like GB2 said.  The other thing is with the generic slicers, you can't expect it to slice as fast as a commercial unit.  Don't force the meat into the blade, just gentle pressure and it will slice just fine.

Excellent point Al.  Any supermarket/butcher will slice meat to desired thickness when requested.  Don't bother asking at Costco or Sam's Club though......

Speaking of which, the Costco on Oahu always has ribeye cut shabu shabu style. The local Costco's finally started getting ahi poke, maybe they will eventually start slicing it that way too.

Butcher is a good idea, however not many does it. I wish local costco have something like john mentioned. Time to experiment again. Thanks for the suggestion fellas.
