Shouldn't that be on the Salmon Opener thread, or a new report, Rob, instead of GS9?

No worries, John.  Rob just hasn't located the "Start New Thread" button yet.   :smt005 :smt002

Anyone is welcome to post Shelter Cove info on this thread.

It's totally relevant to shelter cove. Full stop.

It's not earth shattering news but, Shelter Cove just told me that the rates for camping increased from $22 to $25 per night for NCKA.

For whatever it may be worth to whoever.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

Here's my take on the camping at GS - I wish the campground would just treat our crew like anyone else.  Rent spots, be ready for a crowd, enforce their rules as usual.  The group area that they have provided in the past has been fun for some and maybe not fun for others.  Keeping an eye on each other's gear is a good thing, but being subject to rowdiness and rude or threatening behavior may be a byproduct of the group scene.

I'll call the campground owner and let him know that numbers are down this year, and I'll suggest that it would be great to rent event participants sites in one general area, but maybe he should just keep the site rental on an individual basis.

If the numbers are down this year, hope there will be enough food at the potluck for all the Shelter Cove residents.

Eric, do you often get a lot last minute entries? Looks like we may upwards of maybe 130 when its all said and done. That's freaking nuts.

Weren't there over 200 last year. I got the idea this year is going to be subdued, only 150 or so.  :smt044

A California halibut would still count toward AOTD scoring, but it is now basically a salmon and lingcod (one word) competition.

Eric,

I applaud your conservation efforts. Shelter Cove is a beautiful place and I hope my kids can experience the kind of fishing I've experienced.

What about adding green ling to the species list for GS? I think having salmon, ling cod and green ling sets up a fun, diverse and yet challenging bag for any competitive angler. We all know catching ling cod as by catch while trolling for salmon is a common occurrence. Adding a species like green ling really mixes the pot. Shelter cove has a very healthy green ling population and I think it's fun to catch those little buggers on light tackle.

Mike

It's not a bad idea, Mike, but I'm keeping it as is.  Total inches on Salmon, Lingcod and Cali Hali - four fish turned in with no more than 2 of one species.  Lingcod over 30" landed and safely released on video gets 4" bonus.  500 simoleons to AOTD, and runnerup cash is building to $300 - if we hit that then third place pot builds to max of $200.

Thanks for the considerations Eric, maybe next year on the greenies. OK the fam is a go and Branson is super excited.  I'll drop my paperwork in the mail this week.

I'll also bring up an Lowrance Elite fish finder for the raffle. Can't wait to get me some cove time!

I do often get quite a few last minute entries, Deva, but this year is looking to be down by several dozen at least.  We may end up at 150 or so.  I'm excited to have it cut down to a more manageable level and to be able to have more time to spend visiting with people.  :smt001
