You guys are killin' me.  :smt010

I'm not sure if I'm going to make it this year or not. Derik's pre-school class is going to be leading up the Rose Parade on May 16th.

We missed it last year to be at GMS8.
Whew!  That was good.  Had me thinking there for a bit :smt044 :smt044

For the first time, DFW has limited take on Pacific Halibut to May 1st through the 15th, so that species will not be included in the competition on Saturday, May 16th - let's hope one or more of our members will catch one in pre-fishing.  A California halibut would still count toward AOTD scoring, but it is now basically a salmon and lingcod competition.

We've hit 100 registered participants with 62 of those in the Pro Division competition.  I have followed through with my intention to not promote the event this year because I want quality over quantity.  Numbers are down significantly from last year, and that's fine.  I hope that those who have yet to sign up will be drawn to GS for what I want it to stand for:  a fun long weekend of family and friendship where we enjoy the beauty and bounty of the Cove while respecting the place, the people, the fish and each other.

Thank you for helping me make this happen.   :smt001

Any particular reason for hali take season reduction Eric?

It's pretty complicated, Rich.  Basically, we've never been paid much attention to down here in Nor Cal because we're at the southern end of the Pac hali range.  In the past several years since rockfish and lingcod are no longer open year round and salmon seasons have seen curtailment, more effort has been focused on catching the big halibut.  Somewhere along the line the states north of us along with Canada (International Pacific Halibut Commission) saw that we're landing significantly more than what our allotment is, so there's now some level of effort to legitimize our harvest.  I don't understand all of the details, but we need to cut our harvest this year in order to earn the right to harvest more later, or something like that...  Humboldt Tuna Club is the place to watch for all of the detailed info on it.  The season isn't only May 1-15 - that's just what affects GS.  It's actually like the 1st through 15th for May, June and July, and then open for the summer and closing at some point based on level of harvest.  I'd love to catch another one, but I'm not that interested in the idea of getting all that way offshore to bounce big gear in the usual 200 to 300 feet.  I had a really big one on while salmon trolling right out in front of the lighthouse years ago, but I never got a look at it.

Interesting, I will read up on it. Be nice to hook one, like Bigfoot did, but would also be nice to do it at a GS event where plenty are there to lend a hand, things are vicious!

The one I caught last year was more just a tug of war with the bottom. Once I got it to the side of the kayak it sort of laid there a foot or two under water. I netted it with my club ready. As soon as it hit the net I beat its head in. Fairly simple actually. Once I beat it I ripped its gills. Never picked it up till it was fully dead.

It crossed my mind...

I'll keep it as is.  Two 30"+ lingcod landed and safely released on video along with two salmon should be the winning ticket.  If it's rough though, who knows?...  One lingcod could win it.

SOTD / Sportsman of the Day has always been highest catch and release score, but since rockfish are out I'm considering new criteria.

If someone does get a Pacific halibut during the event weekend (even boatside after the 15th), I'll offer a free Loleta Eric's Guide Service t-shirt for rights to photos/video.

Eric,

I applaud your conservation efforts. Shelter Cove is a beautiful place and I hope my kids can experience the kind of fishing I've experienced.

What about adding green ling to the species list for GS? I think having salmon, ling cod and green ling sets up a fun, diverse and yet challenging bag for any competitive angler. We all know catching ling cod as by catch while trolling for salmon is a common occurrence. Adding a species like green ling really mixes the pot. Shelter cove has a very healthy green ling population and I think it's fun to catch those little buggers on light tackle.

It's not a bad idea, Mike, but I'm keeping it as is.  Total inches on Salmon, Lingcod and Cali Hali - four fish turned in with no more than 2 of one species.  Lingcod over 30" landed and safely released on video gets 4" bonus.  500 simoleons to AOTD, and runnerup cash is building to $300 - if we hit that then third place pot builds to max of $200.
