Really slow day.  I got my first and only trout at 1:30 pm.  Had a couple of other hits.  One that ripped the line off the downrigger like it was nothing.  Probably was a smallmouth bass.  My trout was 14 1/2".

Ray in his boat had a better day than I.  He got a 19" 4.25 lbs trout and a smallmouth bass that probably went 3 lbs.

Frankfishing had a very bad day.  No love for Frank.  He had to leave at 12:30pm to babysit.

I will post the pictures.  But, remenber the small trout is mine.  All the rest are RayMac.

How is it using a downrigger in a kayak, what size ball do you use and where did you mount it.

Thanks
Pat R

Pat,

I am cheap on somethings.  I used a old pole I found at Stevens Creek.  Only found the reel seat side and chopped it down.  I had a old reel I used surf perch and the thing has full drag only and free spools OK.  I use 30 lbs test braid on the downrigger.  My Yak is a Tarpon 160 so it had brass eyelets that I can tie strap the old rod to.  If you look at my picture you can see it.  Used a 1 lb ball  up to 2lbs.  Used a Scotty downrigger release.  Get the one you tie to the downrigger line.  I used to get the ones that snap on but kept on losing them.

Will not use this set up in the Ocean because my legs are under the downrigger pole.  I just count the pulls like Salmon Trolling.  If I use a heavy weight I can see my weight on my fishfinder.

Sometimes you will need to set the hook and the release will not let go.  Just reel in the downrigger until you get the clip and then hand release the line.

I fish Quarry at lease once a week some times more.Just 5min from my house.Depends on the planting times.(THIS LAKE IS PUT AND TAKE.)It takes 2 to 3 days for the fish to start hitting trolled lures. Am a boat person(electric powered) downriggers.lite tackle. enjoy trolling. What works best for me.Start at first light.Troll shallow if water temp is in the low 60's.Deeper as the sun get higher in the sky.My best depth has been 14ft.Use light reflective lures. My most successful lures have been needlefish, small and next size larger.White and shinny scale pattern to match the bait fish, the lake is full of minnows.Bouyants rainbow pattern.also in colors orange, green, gold.Rainbow runners red, green, and white.Summer bite was inline spinner with a night crawler.Caught catfish to 7lbs trolling rainbow runners red or green.I do c/r on the cats. These are planted fish when they get the urge if you are at the right place at the right time hookup. My best tool is perservance. The small and large mouth bass are not planted and are great fighters on lite tackle. The park dept suggest C/R THIS IMPUT HAS BEEN WHAT WORKS BEST FOR ME.
When you fish the Quarry use what METHOD that has worked best for you on other planted trout.

Small mouth?? :smt012  Are you sure there not planted. We used to catch spotted bass, striped bass and really huge weird sunfish but, I've never heard of any small mouth being caught there when I used to fish there back in the

How i made in line spinners for nightcrawlers or rubber worms. 1st cut length of mono 18+ in's long I use 8lbs test.Attach 2 #6 or #4 size red hooks using a knotless snelll tie.Space the hooks 3in apart.then add 5 beads at leading end of mono.Add  spinner clevis with blade. Add 1 more bead. All parts should slide up and down line. How much flash you want deturmens what size of blade you use.  i use red or white.red beads with silver blades white beads with white blade. The setup is very simple once shown how to assemble.Make sure you attach a swivle to the main line to prevent line twist. This setup is only for one or two outtings because of chafing of clevis on spinner blade.Very easy to retie using same parts.Hope these instructions help.

Ray,
Great info sharing and the way you have your boat rigged is awesome. Guys the only thing missing on this boat is the kitchen sink or did you have that hidden. Hope to hook up again soon. Will be adding a couple of scotty flush mounts today so I can add on a downrigger to my arsenal. They diffenitly worked for you at Quarry.
