I plan on buying one of these hobies in the next two weeks but can't decide. I have been using my Ocean kayak trident 13 for the past 5 years loving it and now want a hobie. Albion event was my first time ocean fishing and i loved it but really I'm only on ocean a few times a year. I paddle a couple of miles on flat water no problem and I'm about 5'11" 250lbs and the guy at the Sacramento dealer told me I'm too big for a revo :)

I like the fact that revo can still be paddled and would handle ocean better but PA12 looks like everyone loves it online.  I have an F150 so loading in my truck bed makes transport easier so not real concerned - its only 6" wider and 18 lbs heavier than my brothers new thresher.

Been watching utube videos at leaning towards PA12 even though I started out thinking I wanted a Revo13

Mostly I lake fish in my mud hole called camp far west out near Lincoln but dream of ocean fishing after my Maiden voyage with the NCKA crew at Albion 2014 and have 4 days booked at the campground for Albion 2015 :)

Any experienced hobie advice would help!
 Thanks and happy thanksgiving! Rich

How about an outback?? Very sea worthy, stable, big enough for bigger guys, and roomy (although not as roomy as PA)

I want to go to one extreme or the other with the pa12 or revo13. I dont think the outback is for me although that was the first hobie I considered it's just kinda in between and my trident that I am also keeping kinda fits that category. I looked at the PA12 and outback side by side at the store and they are really close in width so if I'm gonna go outback I figure I should go all the way to PA12.

It looks like you've made up your mind with the PA12. They're very sea worthy as well. Surf launch-wise, I am not so sure. They are a barge to peddle compared to the revo13. Capacity of Revo is only 350lbs, I think. Then add gears, big fish, etc and your pushing its limit. From what I've been told, PAs are gold on lakes/deltas. But when you decide to chase ocean salmon where you'll have to put in lots of miles getting to the fishing spot and then trolling some more, then that's where the revo and outback shine.

Thanks for your feedback Herb. No, Im still having a hard time deciding I'm a minimalist with gear and I think I could fit a revo13 - I'm worried the PA12 wouldn't really be a kayak anymore being that big. I started kayaking  for the ease of tossing my current trident in my truck bed and getting on the water so easy and peaceful that is why my power boat sat covered all this year and I kayaked instead. maybe I'll re look
at outback too - hopefully some PA owners can share their experience

Revo13 or PA14.  The 12 has no glide. Demo the 13 it's a solid boat. My buddy is your same height & weight & my old 13 floated him just fine when i let him borrow it.

I took a couple clients out with PA's this summer, and I felt like their boats were liabilities because if their drives broke down I was not going to be towing that huge barge back to launch.  One guy did lose a fin off his drive, and luckily he'd brought a complete second drive out with him!

I recommend getting a kayak that you can paddle back to shore if the drive fails.

Sounds like you will be doing more time on the ocean - have fun, good luck, see you out there.   :smt001

I recently sold my outback and bought a pa12. I also mostly fish fresh water in the Sacramento area. I am much happier with my pa12. It is slower than my outback but I think it is a much more comfortable boat for fresh water. I also like the rod storage in the pa12. I never have to take my rods out.

Maybe you can demo them both and see which one works better for you.

Go for the Adventure or the Revo (16?), whatever it is they have out this year.
I know you mentioned you are a minimalist, but the pic of you OTW suggests the opposite.
Two rods in back, one up front, bucket, net, wheels, rod holders up front, etc. looks like a clutter problem should you have to self rescue.
Losing an extra foot with the PA12 may compound that problem for you but then again organization can also fix that.
Eric is right about having something you can paddle back in the Big Blue should something go awry.
I have the Revo (08) and the Adventure (09). I was at first concerned about stability issues with the Adv (narrower) compared with the Revo (very stable) but soon found out I had no issues at all.
The Adv is just as stable for me and glides WAY better than the Revo. It's also a piece of cake to paddle should the need arise.
The only tradeoff is the Revo turns sharper. Oddly enough the Revo also has a larger cockpit, but that is not of concern to me. I'm 5'11''.
Adventure has a larger and flatter tankwell which is a big plus.
So you may want to throw one more kayak into your equation. The worst that can happen is you immediately rule it out.

What's the deal with the revo16? I hardly hear of anyone using them. I would imagine they would be one of the fastest boats out there.  Problems fighting a fish around the nose of something that long?

Hardly anyone has one now, but as far as I know the Revo16 is basically the Adventure without the island. Lots of people have the adventure and it's super fast.

Revo16 is not available in most stores still. You probably won't hear much about them until summer.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

I say get the PA 12 or 14. With your sz i think the most important thing is stability. I feel completely safe in the PA. It also paddles ok, not great, but surely good enough to get home in the rare even a drive fails, which wouldnt happen if people would maintenance them. wD40 and backup pins and fins.

I'm 5'10" 240lbs.  Have a revo13 and an adventure 16'.  I load the shit out of both of them, ocean, lakes, rivers---no problemo.  I f'n love the speed of my adventure.

I have the PA 14 and love it, yes it does take a while to get out to the grounds but I would feel a lot more secure and stable in the 14.  It has a payload capacity of 600lbs. The 14 has a bigger cooler in front where you can easily put your catch in.
