Scary story... very happy you all lived to tell about it... time to start wearing my PFD when on my PB even in fresh water.

P.S. - Kudo's and great karma for the PB " Lost Claws "

Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

Greatly relieved that nothing permanent happen one of my favorite Salmonoid whisperers. I was on land nearby listening to the response on police channels. Had no idea  it was someone I knew -WOW!

Considering how cold ocean water is around here, if you are in any kind of boat and are not very near shore you may well need immersion gear as well as a PFD to survive.  If your boat sinks and no other boat is nearby and you cannot contact anyone about your situation you will die of hypothermia even if you are wearing a PFD.  I will always wear immersion gear and a PFD out on the salt if not very near shore.

Thank God you guys are ok.
This is what I always say to my wife, we kayakers protect ourselves for everything. We might be spending much for our equipment but in return, our safety is our benefit.
Thanks to all NCKA kayakers for all the help.

Wow...your the first NCKA I ever met otw and you were quick that day 2 years back, to tell me about the right VHF radio and getting a better pfd etc.....
sure looks like you used all your knowledge to stay alive here on this one....
I am forever grateful to you for not being shy about sharing safety tips and I do the same now with new folks, and , I had the things you told me to buy the very next time I headed out...
glad your okay Dry Bones!!!

Scary story and so glad no one was hurt.

!  PFDs are like a seat belt.  There is no good time to not wear one.  Accidents are just that...unplanned!

I almost always wear one on my skiff and its amazing to see peoples face...they look at you like you're a weirdo.  When I'm not wearing one my girls give me the death stare and I remember to put it on.  :smt044

So be weird!  Wear that PFD!

I feel almost naked without one OTW.
It feels weird not to have one on.
A friend has a 21' Triumph and he chuckled at me when I wore it on his boat. Hey, it also keeps me warm.
He became a convert when he hit a whale in Monterey. Could have one either way when that happened.
Ya never know what's gonna happen or when it's gonna happen.

Very scary indeed. I carry my PFD. VHF. And a Spot location device no matter if I'm on a power boat or kayak.

Wow Steve! So glad you guys are ok. Thank goodness you were able to act fast and help Walter out too. Hard to imagine how quickly things can go from bad to worse. Thanks for sharing your experience so hopefully we can all be prepared if we ever have to encounter a situation like this. It also reminds me of how precious life is and to cherish our fishing opportunities as well as the things and people in life that are important to us.
