I bought a trident 4.7 ultra and the part that controls the rudder ( small horseshoe shape and pin) fell off somewhere. I went back to the store where I bought it and the employee told that it was a weird and hokie set up....it is all original parts, he told me to go to home depot and mcguiver something with nuts and bolts....how to I get the real part for the kayak? ??

I would contact OK, get a P/N from them & then contact the dealer with the P/N or maybe ask/beg OK for one?

I lost one once.  It's just a small shackle, available at stores like West Marine.  I just happened to have one lying around from a different use.  And put some blue locktite on the threads too.

Yes, basic stainless shackle from West Marine sailing department.

+1 on the "blue" loctite to keep it from coming free.  Buy 2 of the shackles & keep a spare in your parks kit.  They are not too expensive & the type of part that can ruin a day on the water if lost.  Allthough, a zip tie could perform the same function in a pinch.

The blue loctite .. do you mean the threadlocker paste stick ? I have trouble keeping the nut on the main screw for my rudder assembly and have been trying to figure out a way to keep it in place. I've tried nylock nuts and the like but they all back off and end up in the drink. The loctite might be a solition.

A nylock nut should never back off .... or at least I have never seen a good nulock nut back itself off.  The Loctite is usually in a tube or small bottle.  The tiny tube (triangle shaped) will do a lot of bolts since all you need is a tiny drop of it.  It is a liquid.

I've never had it happen either until dealing with the rudder. To get the nylock nut to stay locked, I have to crank it tight enough that it pins the rudder in place and prevents it from rotating without significant force. If I back it off to allow the rudder free movement, the nylock quickly backs off and falls into the water. I revisited the issue this morning and it occurred to me that the rudder bolt may have been replaced (I bought the boat used) and may be shorter than the factory screw. I'm thinking a half inch longer bolt and a nylock should do it.

Odd ...  as long as the threads are sticking fully thru a nylock nut, it will generally not back off.

thanks for the pic... that piece was a concern that came to mind the last time i was messing with my rudder, but somehow i talked myself into it being OK.  i'll check mine tonight to see how long the threads are...

That's the problem, to still allow the rudder to swing freely, I can't tighten the nylock down enough to have threads come all the way through. If I tighten it enough for the threads to come through and lock, the rudder is pinched and too tight to move. The more I'm thinking about it, I'm almost sure the bolt was replaced by the previous owner with one that's a half inch too short. Easy fix now that I took a second and thought about it. Thanks for the info about the loctite - its good to know.

Nylock nuts don't work if the threads don't protrude thru the nylon portion of the nut.  They also loose effectiveness if you back them off after initial snugging.  In your case, you are correct in not snugging it down.  Tighten till you still have loose movement of the rudder.
