Why I stop fishing charter boat since I got to kayaking, some friends ask me to go with them to do a crab and rockfish combo. I said the price was too stiff for me $120. I ask them if they want we can go to Monterey for the discounted price, since, they are working prior night they dont want to drive 1.5-2.0 hrs. They decided they will pay half of my share. OK so off we go, brought all tackle I used for Kayaking 6oz jig heads top weight. End up not using them :smt012 . We need 16oz, I was like what? Sure did bought 6 of them at 3 bucks a piece. took more than 2 hrs to get to Farallone Is. We drop the first line I cast mind a bit a way from the crowed, but them other ignorant didnt hear 16oz now 1 guy snags 7 other guys and including mine :smt013 . it took 10-15 get them untangled. then same guy did it again now its even worse, 1 of the tangled guy took the weight (8oz banana :smt013) and throw it in the water. Reeling in 16oz and Rosie in 150-170ft no fun and very disappointing. After a few fish I was ready to call it quits till 1 of my friend got sick and only had 2 small olives, I end up fishing for his limit. It was very exhausting day, It will take a lot for me to go on charter boat again. Somebody took my efing squids strips... :smt011

Just curious.  Which boat did you go on?

Unless its a midweek nearshore crab/rockfish combo trip, I don't go anymore either. The price of those trips is managable once a year or so and the midweek loads are usually half to two-thirds full so theres ample rail room. That deepwater, packed boat stuff can be brutal.

I'll go out when the Humboldt squid are showing numbers, but that's about it.

I'll go out on the Kahuna when the Salmon is to far for me to kayak. Great crew and the captain knows where to find them :smt001

Other than that i don't go on charters too often. Unless it's free :smt003

dude you've been out of the loop in Emeryville, I love Capt Shim too, but he is no longer the captain of the boat for a while now.

I've been trying to get hold of him for the past year to no avail :(

Thanks for the heads up. Was pondering a RF charter soon. If I go, I'll make sure it's a nearshore midweek trip.

Yea, those Farallon trips can be brutal.  Cranking up from 150ft doesn't sound fun and I plan on never doing that again!  Thanks for the report...any pics?   :smt003

And Daniel...I've been meaning to ask you about your buddy Capt Shim.  I heard he lost the boat a while back.

Yeah I heard some disturbing rumors about shim's departure, hope they were not true. I liked fishing with the guy. The Farralon's aren't worth fishing IMO unless for sand dabs or white sharks.
