So...you're telling us you retired while in your 40s?  I should only be so lucky.

I still have two kids at home...12 and 14; I'm 56.  So retirement is only a dream...hell even a 4 day work week is a dream.

Feel fortunate!

Being a recent retiree with questionable plans for the future, I would have been interested in what you had to say,

I retired almost 10 years ago at the age of 56 after a 34 year career with a single company.  I loved the 1st 30 years of my career but the last four, not so much.  It was the lack of enjoyment and satisfaction in my job that motivated me to retire "early".  Like many, my career was also my social circle and NCKA provided a great set of new friends to replace the outgoing work related ones.  I have probably read at least a couple hundred books over the past few years, and I never found the time for recreational reading while working.  I have increased my kayak and fishing time from almost nothing to anytime I feel like it.  I spent a year as a Contra Costa County Civil Grand Juror and a couple of years as a member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries.  Both of these activities provided a good transition from the working world to the non-working world.  Both activities also provided lots of new social contacts and friendships.  There are lots of good volunteer opportunities available that are great for the transition to retirement.  I don't currently have the time for a volunteer commitment.  This is probably a sign that I have completed the transition.  Like most changes, retirement can require an adjustment period.  That being said; I wouldn't trade retirement for employment, no matter what the job.  Mid-week camping and fishing are just too good to give up.

I enjoyed my work but since my employer made it difficult for me to do so, my adjustment to retirement only took the time for me to get in my car to leave the company property.

very good food for thought ..one door closes  another door opens :?:

At LEAST one VK!  But you gotta be looking up not down to see the open door.  LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANY ASSISTANCE.  Like, i could go catch some fish for you, or if you get short need food etc don't be shy.  You are a bro and that means a lot here.

My dad retired, and he kind of coasted through life for a bit without really knowing what to do with himself. He's still figuring things out but it's a work in process.

He saw all the pictures I've been posting of the fishing I'm doing. So he started looking into that, and now he has a boat of his own at his house in St. Croix USVI.

Started scuba diving, painting, woodworking, and other stuff. Just trying a lot of things out until he finds a hobby he's passionate about.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

We use this forum not only to communicate kayaking info, but also to share our personal life experiences with our "NCKA family"; which is, sometimes, our way of releasing emotional stress to people who share a common lifestyle.

While it may come from our heart, some may not fully understand why it what was said, was said. But that could/would happen if spoke with any group of real family and/or friends.

This is a strong community, with real friends you can lean on; we may at times seem like we are constantly bickering, but its all in good fun...

As has been said by many, LET's FISH!!! nothing takes your mind off things like paddling into the horizon with your buds!!!!
The one who dies with the most toys, WINS!
