I'm sure (not going to spend the time looking it up) there is a vehicle code which prohibits impeding traffic as well.
And although it's a valid method of travel, I'll bet 99.9% of those on hwy 1 car topped their bikes to get there.
I have no problem with a bike on the highway as long as it can maintain the flow of traffic.
Impeding traffic is in and of itself a hazard. It has nothing to do with waiting 30 seconds.
And you are right that a 2 ton machine will kill them. EXACTLY why they shouldn't be there.
Hell, I like to picnic. Doesn't mean I can set up a table on the hwy and expect traffic to go around me or wait until I'm done to continue their trip.

169.15 Impeding traffic
No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law or except when the vehicle is temporarily unable to maintain a greater speed due to a combination of the weight of the vehicle and the grade of the highway. I like to kayak. Doesn't mean I can paddle down the channel in Bodega Harbor and expect all of the PBs to go around me.

Its 21202 by explicitly stating that 21656 applies, thatt governs what a bike needs to do on the roadway, when traveling at less than the flow of traffic.

Cyclists must pull off if five or more vehicles are behind them, at a designated pullout or where it is safe to do so.

I would have thought that you all would have been a bit more tolerant and open minded given how much we hate when a PB comes too close at speed.

Why do cyclists want every and all rights to the road? Do they pay for any maintenance to the hwy?

In 99% of cases boats have a whole lot more than a 8 foot wide lane to safely pass someone on a kayak. If I had a entire ocean/lake's worth of space to go around a biker I'd be more than happy to give them space.

The first thing I was taught by bushy when I went out to the ocean the first time was how to stay out of PB way in narrow areas safely, and to stop, stay out of the way, and wait for a safe time to move into PB lane and get out of it as quickly as possible.

I don't paddle down the middle of a harbor and expect everyone to go around me. That's insanity.

Makes about as much sense as putting speed bumps every 3 miles on Hwy 1.
Another speed bump. Everyone slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then be on your merry way for another 4 minutes, then slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then proceed for another 4 minutes, then slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then proceed for another 4 minutes, then slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then proceed for another 4 minutes, then slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then proceed for another 4 minutes, then slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then proceed for another 4 minutes, then slow down, proceed with caution, get over the bump, then proceed for another 4 minutes,...................

All this so someone can go for a bike ride.
They are not going camping or fishing or crabbing or on their way to work or visit relatives or delivering supplies, etc.
And yea, there are a LOT of really stupid laws out there.

The professional cyclists doesn't bug me as much as those idiots who come to wine country and think it's a good idea to rent bikes and ride around from winery to winery, 2 or 3 wide in the middle of the road.
Most of them probably should still be riding with training wheels.

Anyone can be a dick. I once saw a motorhome go onto a very wide shoulder and knock a rider off his bike with his side mirror. I don't know if it was an accident or on purpose.
Back in the day I put over 3000 training miles a year in my bike and was very aware to stay out of the flow of traffic, sometimes to the extent of taking my road bike eith skinny tires off the edge of the pavement.    I didn't want to get killed.  Yet there was the time a car of kids swooped by and dumped their sodas on me, the time a car swerved next to me and the passenger stuck a pistol out the window and pointed it at me, the time a semi swerved next to me and I had to fight not to be pulled under his trailer by the vacuum it created when it passed me.  There were others. Anyone can be a dick, motorists, bikers, the people blocking aisles in markets, etc.  Sometimes they put other people in danger because they are also assholes :smt044

I don't disagree that there's a lot of rude motorists and dangerous ones. That's why there are a billion laws and police officers. It just seems to me there's no pressure on bikers by the LEO's to follow the law and to bike safely and treat drivers with the respect the laws of physics afford them. Bikers should be ticketed for unsafe behavior and not following the rules of the road with equal if not greater frequency than bad drivers.

I'm all for sharing the road.  I expect the same from PB's while kayaking too.  But when someone is being a dumb ass, and is trying to aggravate me by biking in ways that are unsafe, or rude to others, I'm not very happy about them.  There are lots of bikers on Highway 9 where I live.  And usually unless they are in large groups, they hug the shoulders, and there are a few spots where it can be dangerous, but you learn to watch around every corner.  Some of them don't wear bright enough clothing for biking in the mountains though, and I have had a couple close calls because I didn't see them.  Thankfully I don't run into any bikers on Bear Creek Road, where there is mostly no shoulder and is very dangerous to be on a bike.  But if your being self righteous about your right to use a road way, you should feel the same about the others that YOU are sharing the road with.
