As an avid cyclist I try my best to give cars the right of wat and "hold my line." weaving is not part of cycling and I have never heard of putiing a three foot cage around a bike. I've ridden up Woodside road to the coast on numerous occasions and have riiden fom the bay area to Yosemite valley as well as numerous centuries in my hey day. Riding wasa part of life. I always watched for cars and let them have the right of way. In California there is pleanty of room on the roads for bikes an cars. You just have to know how to ride.

I would have thought that you all would have been a bit more tolerant and open minded

+1

I have zero tolerance for idiots and even less for blatantly inconsiderate people.

SteveS, not saying all bicyclists or motorists are the problem......just some. I've been driving Hwy1 to go surfing since 1990 & the obese cyclists wandering around the entire lane have been there......well probably since they constructed the road. But it does seem that as the years went by these same people went from getting off the road & letting cars go by to not giving a f*** & making their, purely recreational journey, take precedent above all others traveling. A lot of people are commuting to work or making food, LP, gasoline, FedEx, UPS, US Mail, deliveries. I've seen bicyclists block all of these vehicles. Not all bicycles. Just a few bad apples.   It would be cool if they could somehow create a bike lane out there. That would greatly increase everyone's safety & also promote more bike tourism.

Common sense and common courtesy are   forgotten practises
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Not all cyclists are riding for recreation

All of us who use the roads are indebted to the early bicyclists of the 1880's. It was the organization of  the American Wheelmen and Albert Pope, founder of Columbia bicycles who successfully led the push for improved roads from town to town. They argued that dependable transportation over roadways was of national importance. Eventually that concept led to  the building of the interstate highway system.

As a biker and motorist who pays highway taxes I am well aware of  road use conflicts between bike and car but have experienced much more frustration being behind slow, slow drivers than bikes. Bikes can be be passed but the motorists puttering along roads like Hwy One and stopping in the center of rural roads to photograph cows are a bigger impediment to traffic by far.

Consider the national health benefits  because of the increased use of bikes as recreation. If there is one thing Americans need it is the health benefits that biking can provide. Check out the average ass size difference in counties in Georgia compared to bay area counties in California.

Nobody in this thread is complaining about safe and courteous bicyclists.

And nobody is saying bicyclists don't have the right to be on the road. They are upset that they (unsafe bicyclists) are not held responsible for following the laws like car drivers are.

...let the records be known that I AM A BIKE RIDER, and will always BE A BIKE RIDER!

I do not get in anyones way while on the road. I act like EVERY MOTOR VEHICLE is a GWS out to get me.

I do not hate or have any ill feelings towards any of them.

I would love to rig up a train horn on my vehicle and give them a few blasts.

Typical dickhead move. I've had drivers do this to me, either to be funny or because they were mad I was there, and it scared shit out of me and nearly made me crash. If you want to warn an unaware cyclist of your presence, give a light honk from 50 or so feet back. Otherwise, you could be cited for assault/harassment.

Why do cyclists want every and all rights to the road? Do they pay for any maintenance to the hwy?

Yes. They do. Our tax dollars are used to pay for public infrastructure like roads, bridges, etc. Even those of us without cars help pay for this. We all pay into general tax funds, whether we drive, ride, or walk. In fact, last I checked, there was far more pedestrian infrastructure than bicycle infrastructure. Perhaps there should be additional taxes for all those pesky pedestrians clogging our sidewalks and crosswalks?

This is a hot topic, and I'm always shocked at the animosity towards cyclists. I can't say how many times I've nearly been hit by drivers who couldn't be bothered to look before turning, use their turn signals, stop at a stop sign, or put down their damn phones. But I don't lump all drivers together. Some are reckless, but most aren't. Same with cyclists. Same with pedestrians.

I am amazed.

One incompetent cyclist encounter and everyone piles on about them being inconsiderate kooks with no business being there in the first place.  Power boat comes within throwing distance of a yak during a big, well publicized sea bass bite, and its all hands on deck to blast every craft with an engine in it and demand licenses so that "they" will be more cognizant of "us."

This is awesome......proceed with the pitchforks gentleman.

I don't disagree that there's a lot of rude motorists and dangerous ones. That's why there are a billion laws and police officers. It just seems to me there's no pressure on bikers by the LEO's to follow the law and to bike safely and treat drivers with the respect the laws of physics afford them. Bikers should be ticketed for unsafe behavior and not following the rules of the road with equal if not greater frequency than bad drivers.

Totally agree all road users should be treated equally with respect to enforcement

You need to come up here to Marin.  We've got multiple PDs out ticketing nearly every weekend in Summer. Most tickets are for running red lights, a few for speeding. Last year there was a big push to ticket the Critical Mass riders.

+1. Cyclists pay for roads, have every right to use those roads as well. I got knocked off my bike at the corner of cable and Newport in OB years ago by a car trying to squeeze between me an oncoming traffic as we approached the stop sign (I'm between her and the parked cars). The collision removed the drivers mirror, and she started to stop and yell that I owed her a mirror until I got up and said "you just hit me". Her eyes opened wide with fear, got in her care and bolted. I only ride motorized forms of two wheels now but the dangers a bicyclist faces cannot be overstated.
