Looks like an older crowd on the boat.
I hope younger ages aren't among the victims.
I have to say that I feel much more comfortable on my kayak and with fellow kayakers than I have ever felt on a boat.
EVERYONE I kayak with is prepared.
A boat gives people a false sense of security. Like nothing can ever happen to them.
As kayakers we all swim at one time or another and it's something we don't take lightly. We are, accordingly, prepared. I wish that boaters shared the same thoughts as we do. There would be a lot less reports like this if they did.

I was out in Tomales Bay and saw the Coast Guard helicopter headed that way. Heard about it later. It is very sad to hear.

85 years old. Excellent way to go. Much superior to laying in a bed with shit in your pants.

I'll take a shallow water black out at that age any day.

It's a sad day for the people left behind. The ones who passed are ok. That's my belief. No one else's. That's the same spot Capt. Rich Tessio made his mistake.

This shows how important it is to wear life jackets. and if it is real rough and you can't stay out maybe a dry or wet suit. Hypothermia must have set in quick.

Big time bummer scene out there today.
Conditions looked pretty bad on the outside.
Listening to channel 16 was sobering.

I was out alone on a skiff yesterday morning, less than a mile from the harbor.  Coming in at 9:30 4-5 foot wind swell squared.  it was brutal, and I actually was a bit scared (adrenaline pump).  I pointed the bow into the waves and wind and took the time to put on  a pfd even though I was openly a1/4 mile from the harbor entrance.  Amazing how much I calmed down for that.

i was thinking in my kayak I'd be a lot slower, but would have felt way more comfortable and safe.

RIP

Not related specifically to the Bodega boat incident but a very interesting bit of information on cold water immersion death. It happens FAST  and much faster than hypothermia ...as we all know when sh*t happens it usually is quick and unexpected. I can't believe it !! JUST NOW, while typing, I took a sip of my morning beverage (I like my coffee cold and green-Mt.Dew) and set it down hooking my pinkie on the straw and tipping it over. Luckily it has a lid on it and only a little went onto the desk and edge of my keyboard. What a goof!

Nothing compared to deadly incident like the crab boat but illustrative nonetheless.

The article may be familiar to some. Well worth the read.

"Cold water shock is a leading cause of death that many people fail to appreciate. One of the authors of "Essentials of Sea Survival", Professor Mike Tipton, is quoted as saying "if you are lucky enough to survive long enough to die of hypothermia, you have done very well; most die in the first minute of immersion".
