So, Brian or whomever..........

Two folks have reported red tide in Monterey Bay.  Is this an issue for quality of fish?  I believe it will be an issue for quantity of fish......correct?

Is it more likely in the kelp, in shallow close to surf or out deeper?
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,
sweat, tear or the sea.

Its been there for over a month or more. Zeelander and I fished there over a month ago and we saw Red Tide on shore at Del Monte Beach. It was quite shallow though. We both cuaght and ate fish from farther out. My impression is taht it is shellfish that concentrate the poision from the algae not fish. I am surprised as I thought the blooms were more ephemeral.

Marmot's correct.  Red tides are caused by blooms of certain plantonic dinoflagellates.  They are then injested by bivalves (clams and mussels), which are filter feeders.  The paralytic shelfish toxin is concentrated in the liver of the bivalve.  Shelfish such as abalone, which are not filter feeders, do not concentrate the toxin and are not affected.  As far as I know, fish taken from the area are OK to eat.
