Hey John,

I hope you can make it out the fishing is really good at Anchor Bay.

1. 30lb braid
2. 30lb leader - these fish are not leader shy so no need for flourocarbon or really any expensive line. I like Pline CXX.
3. Medium heavy , medum fast action.
4. Well there are two categories, Ling and rockfsih.
Rockfish - If I was you, I would use a Pline farallon fly rig. Remove the bottom fly and attach a 2 oz jig head w/4"-5" swimbait to the swivel on the bottom. Or use a Ahi 3oz - 4oz jig (blue or chrome).
Ling - These fish will eat almost any size lure but you want size to win. I would use a 8"+ swimbait. If your one of the first 40 pre-reg entry you'll receive a 7.75" slug. After a few PM's I received, So i've also decided to offer one of my 8" swimbaits if guys rather have that instead of the slug. Add a 4-6oz jig head and your good. Both of these baits catch fish, big fish.

Hope to see you there.

I can't tell you what you *should* use, I am sure someone else will chime in.

I will tell you what my two rods are set up as, and they work for me.

Rod #1:

Shimano Trevala TVC66M rod (30-80# rating, up to 8oz lure, Medium-Fast)
Shimano Curado 301E (mine's left handed)
50# of braid spooled
Leader: 20-25# flourocarbon leader

Rod #2:

Ugly Stik Tiger BWC220170 (20-50# rating, up to 6oz lure, Medium)
Penn Jigmaster 500
Backed with 200yd of 20# monofilament (whatever's cheapest) then topped with 250yd of 25# braid)
Leader: 20-25# flourocarbon leader

I use the Tiger when I'm just drift fishing, since that combo is pretty heavy. I use my Trevala when I'm jigging. When I jig, use a jighead between 3-6oz depending on how fast the drift is and how deep I need to go. I prefer the diamond head jigs, but

I use a big hammer swimbait, 6.5" or 9".
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.
3rd place Kayak Connection Derby, 2014
45th place / 423 pts / 3 Species - AOTY 2014 (nowhere to go but up!)
30th place / 1132.25 pts / 7 Species - AOTY 2015 (moving up a little!)

Always looking for new people to fish with!

I use 50lb braid and up to 60lb leader for tournaments. I don't want break offs. 30 pound leader for normal fishing. 60lb plus will flip your kayak if your not careful.

These guys are pretty much on it in terms of gear and tackle.  I use 50lb braid with 40lb mono leader.

One bit of advice as I noticed you mentioned that you've never been on the ocean.  Try to have all your setup/rigs pre-tied as you will not want to deal with it otw, unless it happens to be a flat lake type of day.  Even then, it'll save you time and headache of having to retie while otw.

Also, if you're not sure about motion sickness, then take bonine ahead of time.  Good luck and see you out there.
If you ain't first, you're last.

Take a couple of kitchen knives and spoons drill a hole attach a hook and drop it down. You will catch fish.

+1 ...I  keep about 6 pretied leaders of 30lb mono, couple jigs and a few big hammers in my pfd for quick access...and  small container with hooks and hoochies for my dropper loop.  My mainline is 30lb braid...it takes some serious tuggin to either free the snag or break the line...any heavier and id probably flip over when it busted free!! :smt044   Also make sure u got the big 3 for safety...pfd, radio, and compass.

Liv2Fish is right on the money, pretied leaders are a must OTW. To keep mine organized I first tie them single swivel on top, single clasp on bottom. I then daisy chain all of them together: clasp to swivel, clasp to swivel, ect. Them wrap them all around a old line spool and add a rubber band. This makes getting a new Pretied leader super fast n easy.

You'll figure out all kinds of ways to keep your gear/stuff organized and ready OTW. Hope to see you at LRC.

Wrap around pool noodle is my way. I cut a slot all the way around it for the swivel and lock.

I have a main line, then barrel swivel, then leader with my hooks.
