For what it's worth, I want to compete against the best.  If the sponsored guys can't win prizes they may not participate.  I don't just want to win, I want to beat guys like RacinRob, ATD and Salty.  I realize that many on the forum are just into it for recreation and not serious competitors but there are plenty of fish and chill hookups.  I'm not looking for participation prizes.  Let's reward the best and work hard at being the best!

I'm with ya Josh,  :smt003 A little friendly competition is healthy and fun.

I like this event but I did not fish it this year because of the design of this new rule. I mean, if he wants a pro category, that's cool, sure why not it could be fun, tons of bragging rights. BUT if you're going to add a pro category and charge to enter you better have some $$ for the winning pro(s).

I think Spike does a great job recognizing his sponsors, illustrates the product(s) and promotes the attending pro-staff and the atmosphere is great fun. But this rule the way it is now, it might deter a lot of pro-staff and their sponsors. Foot + gun = less product.

Sorry the reference wasn't for Josh coming in third place....

At Almanor this weekend, I asked how he was doing, he said he had caught two.  And, just at theat moment, he reared back setting the hook and screamed out  "MAKE THAT THREE!!"

Classic.

Oh, I know that Allen. What would Joel say and do about this topic was my intent - bring it back to the heart.

Thanks and I guess that's my feeling as well.  It's about fun family fellowship and fishing.  My take on Derbies or Tourneys leans towards an "open" entry.  I've always said "First you do everything right, and then you get lucky."  Anyone can win a tourney on any given day if the right fish swims by.  Personally I rely on "lucky" a lot.
(And I have lost  in nearly every tournament I've been in LOL)

Someone above says and rightly so, if you don't like the rules, don't enter.  That's pretty simple.

I do think some tourneys can get a little topheavy with rules. Hate to see it, but I do understand.  I run a Derby every year (non-kayak) and we really have to spell things out because we're not working with any sort of fraternity of participants. We even have a trophy made each year for "Biggest Perch to miss the Weigh-In" after enduring a few tantrums on Derby Day.  Throw the dog a bone.

That's one of the special aspects of NCKA, that this fraternity exists despite occasional bickering and resentments.  Mooch always said you have to be a kayaker first.  In the sense of derbies, the NCKA events have a leg up because we are "Friends First."

I don't think being " sponsored" gives much of a competitive edge . What does make a difference is the time one can be on the water. There are members here who are lucky to get a few weekends in per year and others who can fish 60 days plus. Experience is a big advantage in learning and perfecting the how to do it as well as figure out the best lure patterns for fish species.

What he said...

Man where has this come to and where is it going!

BTW, what's a sponsored!! :-)

Still, some idiots (me  :smt003) forget to read the rules... :smt010; and,

you have even been known to "throw a dog a bone" during the raffle too :smt006!!!

I'll go ride my unicorn & hunt for chupacabra.  I'll have a better chance of bagging one than you do of getting your shirt.

Don't be rude!  In fact, I saw a guy wearing one of the fall classic shirts today.
