Managed to grow a rather large pumpkin for my nephew and niece. Only problem I live in Norcal and they live in Socal. If growing this thing wasn't enough, we now faced the problem of loading this beast in to the trailer for the journey south. Here is a little video of loading the pumpkin. Enjoy the humor.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

I'll see how many seeds come out. Could be 5 or 200. Any proceeds go to PIF.

Brian and any other farmers,

Check out this article.  2K lbs, unbelievable.

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Record-gourd-tips-scales-at-pumpkin-fest-5820092.php

The article interchangably refers to pumpkin as a squash, gourd, and fruit.  WTF is it, really?
And how in the $hit could this guy tell that his 'kin would grow 50 lbs in a day if it wasn't growing on a scale?  Also want to know, when they hit that large size, do they taste like crap?

Too many questions, ugh, hurting my brain!!

I think these are all valid questions :smt044

I grew 3 heirloom pumpkins this year, with no idea what I was doing. So the biggest I got was maybe 10-12lbs. Still eatin' size though!

I am curious about growing a monster like this some day.

Missed the official world record today by about forty pounds, not too shabby ... http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/worlds-heaviest-pumpkin-tips-scales-2-096-pounds-n213846

Good questions. All pumpkins and gourds are members of the Curcurbitaceae, or gourd, family. This includes zucchini and summer squash, winter squash (acorn, butternut, turban, etc.), melons, cucumbers, as well as all sizes and shapes of gourds and pumpkins. Gardeners will see the resemblance in plant shape and growth pattern between all of them, and if you think about it, the fruits have basically the same structure as well. We simply eat them at different stages of ripeness. And yes, they are all technically fruit, not true vegetables.

Have no idea about what they taste like at that size though. To attain this size, genetics are a major factor and they've been bred and bred and bred again strictly for weight. Needless to say, their flavor is not even a minor concern for growers.

Very cool video though. Looks like quite an endeavor moving something of that weight and fragility. I always wondered how they moved them safely. Did you get a weight on that one ?

They should have Billy Corgan be the grandmaster of the HMB festival one year.  that would be rad.  "Despite all his rage" I think he would do a good job lol

I wonder how much and what kind of demo it would take to make one of these jumbos go high order.  who wouldn't pay to see that!
