:smt006 I am looking for a fishing rod. Searching forum and found a millions of them. I don't even know what fast action means. :smt012
Now I have 10ft surf rod with Penn reel battle 8000 model.

 My criteria for the rod.
- Spinnnig
- Less than 7ft (shorter the better)
- Catch RF, Salmon, and Halibut. Yes, I want a rod that can do all.
- Less than $70

Can you recommend me a rod? please post a link.
Can I use that big reel above with this new rod ?

Which ever one feels the best to you.  I can't make all the decisions  :smt005  Truthfully, you need to walk into a store & pick up a rod to get a feel for it.  It's kinda like shoes ... what feels good to one, may not feel good to another.

I would stay no shorter than 7' so up can reach around the front of your kayak with the line in the water.

I prefer the tiger lites over the original ugly sticks.  But to each their own.  Go to the store and put them in your hand.

Coyote Bait & Tackle just south of S.J. has a reasonable selection of them.  I bought one from them about a year or two ago.  Conventional, not spinning though.  I believe they had both.

You're gonna have a tough time trolling for salmon with a spinning setup, but I suppose you could mooch with it. Divers and heavy lead balls put a LOT of stress on your gear.

Why not get a sturdy casting/conventional setup?

I agree. Spinning rods are harder to handle when trolling.

I have one of these casting rods in 7 ft. Ugly Stik Lite
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shakespearereg-Ugly-Stik174-Tiger8482-Lite-Casting-Rods/738935.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dugly%2Bstik%2Blite%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26x%3D0%26y%3D0&Ntt=ugly+stik+lite&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products#productChart

Put in a reasonably priced Abu Garcia round bait caster and you're good to go for RF, Salmon and Halibut.

You can get the Ugly Stik Lite in spinning models, too.

Is that right ?  :smt006
I have been using spinning reel for quite sometimes, so I have no idea what I would be facing with casting reel. You know, you do thing in your comfort zone.

Seriously, is casting reel the way to go ?

Not casting, conventional.  Casting reels are for ... well, casting.  You don't normally "cast" for salmon from a yak (or boat generally).  I have an Ugly Stick & Daiwa conventional reel with line counter that was used 1x for a salmon trip in Monterey (yak).  Thinking about selling it since I just didn't fall in love with the need for a line counter for my style of fishing.

I'll be in San Jose Sunday if you want to take a look at it.
