Is the river deep enough there for Hobies?

Yes.  There are a few shallow riffles, just push the peddle forward and bring up your rudder and slide right over them.

I run this section of river in my Revo 13 often. If I am drifting and stopping to shore fish I generally run without pedals because it is easier then worrying about pedals every time I hit a shallow area and exit the kayak. I did break the chain on mirage drive first time I ran the river, but the current was much stronger then it is right now and I got to close to shore, bottomed out on the rocks in real shallow area.

If I know I will be doing a lot of pedaling, i.e. holding against the current, trying to fish a certain hole I will put my pedals in.

For the overnight, I will probably bring the pedals, not use them the first day and have available for the barge hole. There are a few places on the upper section I like to stop and fish the riffles for trout.

The kayak will be heavier then normal also with camping gear, food and water, will be cautious with the pedals.

Here is a good description of the trip from Anderson Park to Red Bluff, if we wanted to make it three days there is camping at Massacre Flat

http://www.cacreeks.com/sac-red.htm

http://www.sacramentoriver.org/access_site.php?access_site_id=104

Did find out that Cottonwood Creek mouth is now wildlife refuge, no overnight camping.

Will contact BLM Redding office verify where we can camp. Also found an RV park on river that will let us bring extra vehicles in but we would have to pay $37/night for someones RV to sit there, they have ramp on the river.

If I can get the time off I'm interested.  I decided to use this trip as an opportunity to learn how to create custom Google maps.  I think I've got it at this link, feel free to change the map to adjust as the group adjusts plans.  I've made it public so anyone with the link can change it.

Been wanting to do the same thing for a long time.  Especially after my negative experiences doing multi-days on the Klamath. Sounds like fun.

:smt044Reminds me of the last time I took a multi day trip down the sacramento.

Went from the washout near chico to butte city over 2.5 days during the shad run. Yes, that thing floated  :smt044 :smt044 :smt006

I'd be totally down for a trip but I can't get the time off this fall. Have fun!

Okay - Oct 16-1000 launch, camp overnight, off water late afternoon on 17th, two days this time, if goes well we can plan longer trips in future, 275 miles of Sacramento River to cover.

I will continue to work out some details on parking vehicles and shuttle but need a solid head count ASAP.

I will also make a short run down the river next week get some pictures of camp site so you know what to expect, if anyone wants to join let me know.
