At 30 bucks a pop I could buy 3 near identical jigs and not be pissed at myself when they eventually get hung on a rock.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

The betterfly looks good, but the price is just plain RETARDED for the snag-infested NCKA zone.

scwafish,

for whatever reason,  I put an assist hook on the tail of my megabait. it appears to "float" point up,
the the jig always hitting on on side on the bottom.

it did not get snagged and I brought up about 50 fish on it (including the halibut I lost) and still have it.

you might consider the single big assist on the tail, rigged to the side of the jig, so the jig will land with the
assist hook mostly pointed up.

This was MONEY for Black/Blue C&R. the hook I used was the Gami 510, with the barb on the
outside of the hook (to prevent fouling if at the top of the jig) and the barb is tiny. the hook is allmost
a circle, you don't set it hard, just firmly tighten the line.

anyways, I was real happy with that this summer.

Best,

J

Sean, thanks for the intel. I'm looking to make the same substitution now that Megabait is no more. I found a small supply of MB Kudakos at a local shop that specializes in freshwater - hint, hint, look at unlikely sources - but they won't last forever. Down south, I use the jig more for pelagics than rockies. On a recent trip offshore, my first to try out the Braid Slammer, it seemed to work nearly as well, accounting for several paddy yellowtail. Further experimentation is indicated.

PAL-the search for the mega replacement will be long and tortureous, but we will overcome

FYI_I made some homerew stingers ala Bsteves post.  Very EZ and its fun to make your own, not to mention WAY cheaper.

how about your basic salas 6x jr in chrome with a siwash or assist?

4.6 oz, 4 inches long. would be good with a little prizm tape.

I have 3 sumo jr's, in chrome and glow, clones of the salas more or less.
the glow seems a little strong so I covered most of it with gold prizm tape.

Another thing I could not resist doing is expoxying eyes on my diamond jigs, both ends.

They seem to catch fish, but as long as I have megabaits left, I will probably fish those.

I have tried irons like a salas many times and they don't seem to work as well as the mega for rockies.  They do however work great for other things.

how about the luhr-jensen crippled herring?

I know one of those cabs @ BH was caught on that as well as a lot of other stuff.

maybe buy the chrome one and take a black sharpie to its back and dip it in epoxy?

How about the gibbs minnow in black and chrome?

http://www.gibbsfishing.com/products/minnow.asp

or the heavier floor walker model?

on the live jig, what makes it so good, the finish? the shape? all of the above?

they do kick ass, I have to say.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I have tried the Gibbs and seems to work so-so, need to spend more time with a CH, it looks promising.

Mick-whats up with those ebay jigs?  How much are they?
