I need to buy a transducer for my regular (non-dsi) Lowrance Elite 5 FF. But I can't figure out which one I need to buy.
I thought I needed the HST-WSU because it is often marketed as "works with Elite 5 series" even though it says 200kHz. So I got the HST-WSU but it doesn't work :-(

I can't find any other type of transducer that says it works with the Elite 5 series. Been without a FF since May. Which has been a refreshing change of pace. But I'd like to get my FF back in action before the next time I go fishing (probably mid-November).

For the Elite-5 (non-DSI), you should use part #
106-72 or HST-WSBL (Skimmer type)
or
106-75 or PDT-WBL (pod type)
Hobie Outback (dune)

Sort of a trick question.  It depends if it is the older Elite 5 or the Newer Elite 5 HDI or Elite 5 CHIRP capable unit  :smt002

The older ones are a black, 'D' shaped plug & the newer ones are blue, round plug style.

The #'s i posted are for the newer units.
I figured that since the HST-WSU (for older unit) that you posted didn't work, that you must have the newer model  :smt003

Not a trick question. This is the head unit you gave me, Bill. It's a standard (non-dsi) Elite 5. Pre-HDI and pre-CHIRP.
Transducer # HST-WSBL has blue connectors and doesn't appear to work with the Elite series (based on the descriptions online). The HDS series and older LCX series uses blue connectors; but the elite series does not. Same deal for the # PD-WBL...it has blue connectors and is not advertised as working with the Elite series.
The regular Elite series uses the black D-shaped plug.

More info about the compatibility of transducers w/blue connectors: http://support.lowrance.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1001&PARTITION_ID=1&secureFlag=false&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=2344

Although...this article says HST-WSU works w/the Elite series...it's wrong. I have the transducer in my possession and it doesn't power up my FF. http://support.lowrance.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1001&PARTITION_ID=1&secureFlag=false&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=2343&SOURCE_RELATED_ARTICLE=true

HST-WSU should power it up.  That is the "older" unit that used the black uni-plug.  We did power that one up when you were at my place, didn't we?  I believe I have another just in case we need to swap it out.

I agree that the Lowrance site needs a little help when it comes to transducer help.

Pretty sure the head unit works--I think we used it @ your house. But it won't power up with HST-WSU #106-48. I tried 3 different fully-charged batteries. The connectors look right...with the d-shaped black plug & nut. So I'm sending it back and will continue looking for the right transducer haha.

The HST-WSU should have worked with it according to my sources @ Lowrance.  Unless it was swapped out in the package from the retailer or ????  Not sure but that is the one.

Well, I have a RMA to return this one to GPS City. But I haven't mailed it yet. Because there's a chance the head unit is broken OR the transducer they sent me is broken.
Planning to hit WM after work to hopefully do some trouble-shooting. Step 1 is to plug in my head unit and confirm it is operational. Step 2 is plug my HST-WSU into a working head unit. That should help me figure out if one of my parts is broken (either head unit or transducer) OR if hst-wsu is truly incompatible with the Elite 5.
Next transducer to try would be the PD-WSU.

Just to followup, I wondered if the transducer I bought from gpscity was broken so I went to West Marine and plugged my head unit into a brand new HST-WSU transducer, with a fresh battery...and it would not turn on. So that means either: A) the head unit is broken; or B) Lowrance is wrong and HST-WSU does not work with the Elite 5.
Next step is to determine if my head unit is operational. If it does work...then I know the issue is the transducer. In which case, I will purchase the PD-WSU transducer. And cross my fingers. :-)

Just to followup...transducer HST-WSU does work with the Elite series. It wouldn't power my Elite 5 because my battery charger (bought at Cabelas about 7yrs ago) is no longer working. So now I need to buy a new battery charger. I guess those smart chargers are the way to go...time to search through the archives for recommendations.

Glad the source of the troubles was identified.  I have been using the 'Battery Tender Junior' for ~$30 @ Home Depot.  750 mA output  Seems to work good.  Doubles for the batteries on the motorcycles, etc.  Comes with an assortment of output terminals.

Thanks for helping me diagnose the problem, Bill!
I'm going to checkout HD for a charger today.
