Thanks Gordon!  Sounds like you had a fun day overall.  Tough break on the one that got away...  It happened to me also, except I didn't tighten my drag - I just brought it up slowly, then it took line to bottom again, then up again, then bottom again, then up...  up...  poof.  nothing.  Sometimes ya just can't win.  Second time my drag was a little tighter; maybe that did the trick.

Weighed it on Ben's hand spring scale at 22.5 lbs.  Thought it was heavier than that (have caught several 25#+ salmon), but I guess looks can be deceiving...

Speaking of size, I think I need a bigger cutting board...  16x11 suddenly seems too small.

What a terrific morning!  41"?!?!?!?!  That is great!  And the 4 way coastal special.  Thanks for sharing everyone!  Sorry about the water yakingal.  I've begun free diving.  I seem to swallow less water doing that than with a bad landing!!...

Craig, awesome video!  I didn't realize that visibility on the bottom was that good and there were so many fish hanging around.  In my scuba days we always dove near structure or in the kelp not open eaters like BH.  I also got an appreciation of why and how our lures get snagged.

Ed and Mary, I'm sorry I said in my post that the launches and landings were easy.  I didn't realize that you folks had such a rough go of it.  I'm also sorry that I didn't post Ed's carnage picture yesterday.  I was wrestling with the flak he would get because it looked like he had 2 cabbies on his stringer.  Then I remembered that one was Mary's and the other one was Ed's.  AND he did know that we're only allowed one 15" or larger cabbie.

Gordon, 2 poles?  We had previous threads about this...

Loose or tight drag?  If its loose you can at least use your thumb as added drag but if its too tight...just hope your line/knots can take the stress.  For lings and cabbies we're trying to keep them from jumping into a hole so added pressure at critical times will make a significant difference.  For halibut they're in open waters so we're playing tug of war to see who's going to make the first mistake.  Personally the sound my drag makes as a fish is ripping off line is music to my ears.

For every ling that was landed there were probably at least two underlings that were set loose.  You can imagine how many "mooch" screams were let out on Sat.

Good times folks!

Gary

No worries.  I'm just not as good as you "pros" are at launching or landing.  Yesterday at Bean was my actual first official launch and landing.  I was supposed to eat water and sand.   :smt005  I will eventually get to where I can go out and come in just like the rest of you.  It might take me 10 or 15 years, but hey, I'll get there!   :smt002

Thanks Erik!  I know there are plenty of NCKAers who have caught big lings - just glad to have been lucky enough.  I barely had gotten the net in the water next to it - fortunately it swam in the right direction when it spat the hook.  It tried to take off under the boat then, which is why I needed 2 hands to grab the net strong enough to hoist it up quick, and even then it was only half netted, which is why i had to wrestle with it - it kept spinning out, to the point where I just had the net over it, and not around it.  I really barely got it, and then had no clips on board 'cause i left them at home.  Ben was very thoughtful to paddle to my aid so fast.

I am sure glad I got that ginormous Promar 36" folding net.  In addition to my ling, it's safely (and pretty easily) hauled out 4 huge halibut this year.  Best $60 I ever spent, maybe.  Hook1 carries the smaller version - I think Mooch should see if Karen can pick up the bigger size that I have.  It has been quite durable - still no torn webbing, despite sharp teeth and RF spines...  I give it 6/5 stars!  It's only inconvenient in a stiff wind.

Yeah Seabreeze, thanks - I agree with you on Greg's amazing catch, plus he was off the water almost 2 hours before the rest of us.  Impressive!

Mary, I do think it will take less time than you might believe...  To make an analogy, you are just like trying to learn to ski on an advanced-skill slope.  I think the toughest part is learning how to get in the yak when you are knee-deep in water, and start paddling quickly enough.  Maybe you can practice that from the beach in Alameda or something.  Heck, they are still getting halibut out that way anyway.  Maybe you can con sudmucker into going fishing over there.  But those are nice cabbies you and Ed took home!

Chuck, thanks for the link!  Next year I will have one of those puppies, for sure.  I tried to upload the other movie but it's still too long - need to edit it.  Should have it up this week.  It's not all that exciting, but it's cool to see once.  I'd like to go down to Monterey and just take pictures with it, and not jig at the same time.  It goes to 130 ft deep and stays watertight.  Also, it goes to ISO 1600, so it's great in low light.  Just makes the colors more washed out apparently.

Gary, yeah, even when the bottom is kinda flat looking, it does seem that there is plenty to snag on, huh. I wonder if the vid would be more colorful if the sun were out.  And your right - BH was so fishy Saturday.  Sorry you missed it J!

I tried to cook and eat an underbelly filet from the ling tonight - I couldn't eat it.  I think I am a little sick honestly.  But maybe the underbelly isn't as tasty either.  I was pretty dead today.  Fishing Saturday kinda sucks the weekend outta me...
