Well this has been fun. Between this thread and the Annies debacle I'm learning a lot about the folks who make up this motley crew...

This is the last time I'll be getting involved in any politically charged discussions on this site. No one likes a one-against-many debate, especially when the jokes start flying.

Hope you guys at least keep your boom sticks locked up properly when you aren't toting them around with you.

Stay safe...

Statistics is math and science. Not politics. Can we keep talking about that?

No. I'm done.

I stepped in and voiced my agreement with another poster (elkhorn), but it seems he's moved on. I'm not going to try to debate a whole crew of people who not only don't agree with me, but also seem to be having a good time cracking jokes at my expense. That just doesn't sound like a good time to me.

We're not cracking jokes at your expense.  We're cracking jokes to keep the topic from getting overly serious.  Sorry it has had the opposite effect in your case.  But really ... crack a joke and laugh with us.   :smt006

Hahahaha

I love you all, regardless if you have guns or not. You guys know how to have a good debate without name calling (most of the time)

Out of respect for members opinions on this board I will not conceal carry at any tourneys or NCKA sponsored events I attend. Not because I am an anti, but just because we have some members here that obviously are against firearms.
This choice I make out of respect for them.

Peace out homies.....
Matt

I haven't found any where in anyone's post where it says you shouldn't own or carry guns. I merely stated why I made the decision not to carry based up my own circumstances. I love the comparison to car crashes though because the numbers are actually very close to each other but you use your car everyday for hours at a time. As for hammers think about this. If you carry a hammer with you everyday I bet your going to find some nails that need to be pounded.

I dunno.  Asking "Why do you need a hand gun to catch fish?" and then comparing it to needing pacifier is a less than polite way of saying one shouldn't carry guns.

I'm not done with this thread. Statistics are fun.

Pirates are the cause of global warming. Specifically the lack of pirates. The pause in global warming is directly attributable to the increase in piracy off the Somali coast.

Graph that proves it:

We should stop patrolling and targeting pirates off the Somali coast. The fate of the world depends upon it.

As a sometimes -practicing Pastafarian, I have seen this graph before.
May you all be touched by his noodley appendage! WWSMD?

seriously,
I prefer not to have guns on the water around me, unless we're talking bear country...
I don't have much other than my personal experience which is limited. The occasions I have seen guns out in conjunction with kayaking have been few but the two I remember were:

 1. a guy who decided that after 3 beers it was time fer' some shootin' (unnerving to say the least except that he couldn't hit anything and ran out of ammo), and

2. the self professed search-and-rescue guy who brought his pristine M1911A out, only to return hypothermic and with his gun covered in rust from a saltwater capsize and 24hrs in the wilderness.

Yeah, you can say these dudes were kooks, and indeed I thought they were, but they are part of why I'm not a fan of guns and paddling unless it is a 12ga and we're in grizz country.

I can't speak for freshwater stuff, but on the salt around where I paddle, a gun isn't going to help you in the event of a shark attack so I don't see the need for one.

all this said, we love our guns in this country. And I'm often conflicted. I'm not an anti-gun by any means, but I find that more and more, guns make me uncomfortable because they are just frikkin everywhere now and I think there might actually be something wrong with that. Maybe I'm just getting old.

If one of my closest friends had not had access to a gun (legally owned) I have the thought that he and his father might both be alive today. Maybe not, but with ready access to a gun, they are not now and that is for sure.

In my eyes and experience it isn't just about "protecting you from yourself" it is actually about my own personal safety when others are carrying. Again, this is only my personal experience that I can draw from.

fishing and paddling are quite thrilling enough for me, and provide a lot of needed therapy. Said therapy is , in part, needed due to the way firearms are viewed and glamorized in our current society (see my examples above).

But in the end I keep my .22s and shotguns because I'm a sentimental guy who remembers the fun I used to have shooting them at cans and silhouettes. But I lock them up and don't take them kayaking with me.

anyway, end ramble

Well said, Pisean. On a serious and somewhat unrelated note, I too miss Aaron. And his situation is part of the reason why the idea of 'guns for everybody' makes me feel uncomfortable. Statistics show that a significant percentage of our community suffer from emotional or mental instability. And I don't want to be anywhere near those people if they're armed.
