This is the second time I've got to the water and found my HB 688 is not coming on.  The last time I sent it in for service and Humminbird fixed for free - said it was corrosion on the connectors.  I'm guessing the same this time, but I don't see any corrosion and I've cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and pipe cleaners, the best I can given how small they are.  This time it didn't go through a yard sale, just normal use.

I've done some research on the board and see the Corrosion X is advised.  Will try cleaning with that once I find some and if it doesn't work will send in...again.  I've already tested the power pins with my multimeter...voltage is fine at the pins...just like last time.

I'm thinking a better approach is one where I don't have to keep connecting and disconnecting the head from the power and transducer cables.  Like one of those self contained drop in modules I've seen on some of the other kayak brands.

Am I missing something?

Dielectric grease is your friend.

Swap your head unit with someone else to see if it works on their base and visa versa.

This is a fairly new unit isn't it Aaron? Something isn't right. Sounds like Humminbird needs to do something more for you.

I've already been putting dielectric grease on the connectors...hasn't solve the problem.

having a hummingbird with issues I would check:

the pins on the battery plug, even a little corossion and they get this and loose connectivity.  I keep my connectors slathered in bulb grease (dielectric as its also known)

all connections in the line between the battery to that plug are suspect.

also the connections from the transducer should be greased and checked.  If that connector is not working it can result in powering off randomly.

if you don't have a fuse in line from the battery you could blow the internal fuse on the unit when the battery is connected.  I have done this a couple times :(
If this is the case, send it in and expect it back in 2 to 3 weeks...
the fuse should be 3 amp MAX, seriously, 3 amp MAX....  dont ask how I know this...

While I agree in principle I've been using 5A fuses as I have a stash of them laying around.

Why do you say 3A and how do you know this?  Seriously ...

I had something similar happen on a friends boat and it ended up being the fuse even though it looked good.  Now if there are issues that's checked first.  It's was 3amp so just replaced with what was in it.

with 5A fuses I blew the board fuse on my 565 three times and when I complained to Humminbird that I was using a 5A fuse and it was still blowing the main fuse, the service rep said to use 3A.  since switching to 3A I have not blown the board fuse.

That would mean that the board fuse is a 4 amp?

logically, yes.   or a cheap fuse "rated at" 5A but not quite....

Interesting, I didn't even know that there were board fuses.

If I was blowing a board fuse with regularity, I don't think I'd be looking how to protect it with an external fuse.  A board fuse should never burn as part of normal operation.  I'd be asking the question, "why is it burning in the first place?".
