Hello all,
I have been wearing wetsuits for a few years now and tried on my first Drysuit (borrowed from a friend)  the other weekend.  There seems to be so much benefit from wearing a drysuit but the big downer is the price.  which do you prefer?  please tell of the benefits and drawbacks of each from your own experience

It really depends on the day,
I have both, but dread the dry suit on those hot sunny days. Also, hate the wet suit on those cold foggy days.
Any vote for just one, would indicate a need to fish more often.
Can I vote for both?

If you like scratching your ass for hours after being in the kayak for 5-8 hours soaking in water then get a wetsuit. You don't even have to get a dry suit. Get some Kokatat Tempest pants and a paddle top.

Since buying my Kokatat Angler drysuit I've never worn my FJ wetsuit.  I don't miss sitting in puddle of water. :smt001
If you get new a kayak with the raised lawn chair seat that would also help keeping your butt dry but thats more $$$.

I love my drysuit!  However, like Yakhopper pointed out, they are a bit hot on the nice days.  Some guys will unzip and pull it down and tie around their waist which cools you down but I don't think it's the safest option.  If it's going to be a nice day I will just use my wetsuit but pulled up halfway with some paddle pants over and then a t-shirt, fleece jacket and windbreaker.  This gives me the ability to shed some layers and cool down.

Drysuit for sure. It doesn't bother me whether it's hot out and it's a big plus on those cold foggy days. They maybe pricy, but worth the investment.

I opt for the wetsuit. I wear water proof bibs and jacket over it in the salt or rain. I like the idea of added flotation as well. I paid for the custom built Harvey 3mil farmer john with relief zipper.

I've never worn a dry suit, but from what I understand, they are not meant for long periods of emersion (at least for the fishing versions.) And I would be pissed the second I realized that I accidentally put a hook through a $450 multicolored trash bag  :smt003

Plus I get to use my wetsuit for sniping pickers out of the creek.

Poor man's drysuit = farmer-john wetsuit with splash pants and a paddling top. Especially if you already have a wetsuit...you can often find splash pants on sale for around $50. I did that for years and it worked great...although a little harder to pee because most splash pants don't have a "relief" zipper.

The Kokatat Angler Drysuit has cordura fabric in the leg area to prevent hook punctures. It works great.  It doesn't tear like a trash bag.

Wetsuit w relief zipper

I worked in a (very expensive)drysuit for a few years and went back to using my freediving wetsuit, find it easier to swim

Only reason for wearing anything is for when you end up in the water, otherwise I'd wear shorts

Maybe the sport dry suits fit tighter than what I had. mine had a serious insulation suit so I was always cooking

Definitely need the relief zip

I have used both. Mostly the wetsuit though. The dry suit is nice, but I did get warm. It was borrowed. Ideally I would like both, but my Tempest pants work great and keep me dry and warm. I wear wool socks under and have worn my FJ under and also Polar  tec or Polar Max bottoms? As  far as sitting in water all day. Many boats have seats that are not in the water any more. Not just the lawn chair boats either. My Tarpon is nice and dry with no water in the seat, even when getting slammed by waves. Boats have come a long way since the Prowler and older Tarpon days.  My FJ has relief zipper. The dry suit did as well. The Tempest pants don't, but all I do is pull them down and do my business. A little more work with the pants
