I don't think its about competition myself. Its more about pushing yourself to see what you can accomplish IMO. Im proud to spend as much time as I do with my son Kris. He has become quite the angler. My advise to you is too spend as much time as possible fishing hunting or just hanging around with your kids because the grow up faster then you think.

Looks like my understanding was incorrect, I was under the beliefe that all pacific salmon were on the endangered or threatened list.
In stating my thoughts about this it was stated that I may have tried to sabatoge or discredit the AOTY compitition.
For these actions, I am truly sorry, and all I can say in my defense is sometimes ignorance is bliss.
It was Polepole who pointed out my error and Crash who took the greatest offense, so I would like to personally apologise to them first for my error.
Next I would like to apologies to Big Jim and the AOTY committee as it was stated that by a comment I made, I was discrediting the event as a whole.
Please accept my apology as sincere and true as I NEVER intended to discredit this event.
Yes, I still would like to see the open mouth rule worked on, but that's my issue.
Anyways,
it took me a day of resurch, and when im wrong, I am willing to admit it. I can only hope you all will acept it.

Thanks for reading,

Right on Eric.  That post is a testament to your character and that found here on these boards.  It takes a stand-up guy to write that.  We are clearly a passionate lot, but foremost I chose to believe that we are men and women of character.

I've been following every page.  I don't understand a lot of it.
But I do have a few small things to add.

1) I'll join this year because it's my FULL first year aand I'm hoping to get out more to fish/hang with you guys.  There is NO chance of me winning since my father is deathly sick and I got a new one on the way in February.  So, I won't be out much.  it will be easier choice for me to join if there is a raffle for a hobbie (so if my father makes it through the year, he can join me... If luck is on my side. So, add the raffle and I'm most likely in.)

2) I'll sign my 3 1/2 year old on the junor division (and even pay $30) if he can get a very cool "fish trophy" of sorts and  a "goodie bag" to help him learn.

This is all coming from a guy that's got into fishing form HOW, and I'm hooked into NCKA family. It's been good for me AND MY FAMILY. I Have not even been around for a year and don't expect much, EXPECT THAT I keep seeing the cool  :smt008 you guys share for each other (no matter what "click" you're in).
I'm not going to answer/commit on the drama side it.  I just want to guys to hear from a noob side.
Common sense is not common.

I think the Jr AOTY will either be $20 to enter, or Free with parent's entry.
And no complaining/whining/sniping allowed.

We will be very strict on this when it comes to the kids....automatic DQ of parent seems like a fair consequence for any non-compliance.

On the one hand, if its a competition, then the idea that everyone gets a trophy is kind of repugnant - winners get trophies.  If its a recreational pursuit with regular kids meetups, then the idea that everyone gets a trophy or ribbon or something is great.

As I thought more about it, I think acheivement catagories for the younger kids would be great.  Make them go through some steps, merit badge style.  Make bait.  Bait a hook.  Clean a fish.  COrrectly identify 10 species of fish.  FIsh in salt water.  Fish in freshwater.  Use a baitcasting ree.  Use a spinning reel.  Be able to tell the difference.

As kids get older, make the tasks commensurate with age and experience.  Teach them to become the next generation of conscientious anglers, but do it in a group type setting to keep them interested.

Mostly just thinking out loud here, comments and critisism welcome.

I would join JAOTY with both my neice/nephew if my brother wants to. It'd be fun. Sure they might be competiting against 17 year old boys but who cares. The # might be low when they are 6 years old, but by the time they are 17 years old they could track their #'s over the years and be real contenders themselves. And maybe even topple the adult AOTY too.  :smt007

Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.
3rd place Kayak Connection Derby, 2014
45th place / 423 pts / 3 Species - AOTY 2014 (nowhere to go but up!)
30th place / 1132.25 pts / 7 Species - AOTY 2015 (moving up a little!)

Always looking for new people to fish with!

Dude!  Much respect for manning up.  That being said, I know your heart is in the right place w.r.t. the fish, and I appreciate that.

You all know I'm a little sensitive to sweeping statements regarding conservation.  I do my best to point out errors in interpretation that might lead to misleading conclusions.  It's bad enough we have to fight the NRDC's of the world, but to fight among ourselves over incorrect assumptions just serves to divide us and provides ammunition to those that would like to see our past time shut down.
