This year the grandprize Hobie Revo13 will be raffled off.

See here for details:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=54224.0

Quote
The kayak will be raffled off at the 2014 Awards Ceremony.

Each participant in AOTY/DOTY will automatically receive one entry into the raffle once they pay the $40 entry fee. Participants can receive up to 20 additional raffle entries for each species submitted and approved in both AOTY and DOTY. 21 entries into the raffle will be the max that any player can have.

The goal of the raffle is to encourage participation and friendly competition amongst those anglers and divers that may not be able to invest the amount of time needed to finish in the top three.

I have attached a doc that shows everybody who has paid for AOTY/DOTY, the number of species they have entered in each comp, and the total number of tix they have so far...

If you see mistakes PLEASE let me know, and if you have any questions just let me know as well!!

Get out there and get some new species and increase your chances of winning a brand new Hobie Revo13!!!

Daaaamn Jim, you have 20 species!?  Such a beast  :smt004.

That's cool how DOTY separates out the rockfish species.  Kinda wish AOTY did that...maybe not with rockfish, but it'd be cool if it were done with trout.  It's interesting how brown trout and rainbow trout are just lumped together under one category, because I look at them as two species that require different tactics and approaches (if you want to get the big ones anyway).  We have separate categories for the black bass species.  Why not the trout?  Hell, you could say the disparities between rainbows and browns are even more distinct than between smallies and spots since smallies and spots can hybridize with one another, while rainbows and browns didn't even evolve on the same continent!

Or maybe I should shut up since it's not my competition and rules are rules  :smt005.

LMAO!!

Dude...you know as much if not more about fish than any guy I know so I take your word for it!!

Makes sense to me...maybe we can start a thread with suggestions for 2015 changes?

Haha, thanks man...but there's always more to learn about em  :smt004.

Maybe I'll bring the trout thing up in a separate thread.  I think I recall something similar being proposed last year, and some people detested the idea.  But I wasn't signed up in AOTY at that time so I wasn't in a place to say anything.

FWIW, I hope next year can start with going back to giving a grand prize to both of the people that actually fish & dove the hardest. I know there are those that want to just "win a prize" by purchasing raffle tickets but I don't believe that AOTY OR DOTY should be 'just another raffle' since they are the hardest tourneys to win. There are already plenty of one day tourneys to show up, not even fish or dive, & win a prize.

This year if my one ticket happens to be drawn I will be giving the prize to the person who wins AOTY. Anything less, to me, would be a slap in the face to that individual who put the time in, up to nine years, to accomplish something worthy of a prize. I really hope that this year's actual AOTY wins the raffle......& I'm not ashamed to say it. There's a HUGE difference between year's of hard effort & dumb luck in buying a ticket. jim

I'm also diving every time I go fishing on the coast for the rest of the year. I need to pad my tickets with some speared fish. I forgot to post a black I shot at Albion. Oops.

Salty, I'm with you all the way. The raffle is lame. It might have been a good idea to increase revenue but that's all. It totally discredits the first place winner.

I'm sorry you guys feel that way.

FWIW, the raffle was the idea of multiple people on the committee and I agreed with it after it was presented, and so did the Hobie Rep. who donated the yak.

When I presented the idea in December of 2013 there didn't seem to be a lot of pushback on the raffle idea so we went with it...

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=51372.0

Ideally I would love to see a prize yak for both the winners of AOTY and DOTY...maybe some of you industry affiliated guys can help out with making that a reality for next year?

Would be awesome to see WS or OK or JK or whoever donating a yak to either AOTY or DOTY...

Also...FWIW...if anybody out there has interest in stepping up and helping out with AOTY, DOTY, planning, coordinating, verifying entries, activating accounts, soliciting prizes etc please send me a PM.

So far I have had Rider and Big Buoy express interest in helping us get a Junior AOTY started which is AWESOME, but I would be stoked to get some more help from other folks out there...

I have been spending a LOT of my free time on AOTY/DOTY/PIF the past few years and am getting kinda burned out and would be stoked to turn over some of the responsibilities to other folks...

I have made a new thread here to post any ideas/suggestion you all have.

If you guys don't like how AOTY/DOTY went down this year you shouldn't have entered.

I just read the whole post that Jim just referenced and there was not one single objection to the way it was set up.

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

I am signing up next year. I like the way this is set up. It gives the hard workers a great chance at winning, but let's the people who can't get out as much have fun too.

And IMO it promotes a friendly competitive attitude. I know from experience how much drama spawns from things like this.

I'd like to get involved a bit so I'll pm you after work and see if there's something I can do, Jim.

3rd place Kayak Connection Derby, 2014
45th place / 423 pts / 3 Species - AOTY 2014 (nowhere to go but up!)
30th place / 1132.25 pts / 7 Species - AOTY 2015 (moving up a little!)

Always looking for new people to fish with!

If I did the Excel AutoSum thingy correctly  :smt005, there are 741 tickets in the hopper so far...

Thanks dude.

I know it is impossible to make everybody happy all the time...just a fact of life...but yeah, we wanted to try and get as many people involved as possible to promote both friendly competition AND raise as much $$ as possible for a good cause (PIF).

Stoked you want to get involved dude, and look forward to talking with you about it later.
