Tried Tommy Welborn's technique for lings last week at Albion and Russian Gulch.  What a difference from the barely legal I was used to catching.  Thank you Tommy!  Lings to 31 inches.

Four photos:
   1.  Tommy Welborn with his salmon and ling at Albion 2014.
   2.  Tommy's big brother with nice vermillion.
   3.  31 inch ling.
   4.  Shameless promotion for Tommy's product.

I have fished with my brother my whole life and his tricks don't come easy.  He has instinct for reading water and it's surroundings.  He fishes with no fish finder/GPS and still kicks my butt.  We will be fishing the same spot and he out fishes me over and over.  His secret!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep your line in the water.  Really.  He keeps his line in the water more than anyone else.  1) That means he fishes more that most for starters. 2) He snags up less  than others 3)He fishes all depths of water and Here is the last trick.  He will kill me for letting it out. I had to fish in the same kayak with him to see it with my own eyes as it is so slight you would over look it.  4)He uses blunt force trauma swim baits.  HA HA HA HA.  You thought I would give away his secret.  But for reels I did not see the last trick till I was in his kayak with him.  The best fishermen on the water will never tell ya their trick but they will always be glad to help and fish with ya.  The next time you get a chance to fish with one of the truly great ones take some time to really watch them and all they do cause they surely are not going to come right out and tell ya their secrets.  This club (NKCA) have many great ones so next time you hook up and fish with them pay attention cause it will pay off big.  Thanks to my Brother Tom and our mentors growing up who took us fishing in Baja/Alaska and all our local waters.  RIP Don and Phillip you two taught my brother and I how to listen to the waters.

Catching big lingcod isn't all that hard . Really. Keep the swimbait down on the bottom and use scent.

Albion is an easy place to go past the depth limit without even getting to the whistle.  SO whats his trick for knowing when he has gone beyond 120ft and isn't supposed to have a line in the water if he has a rockfish or not supposed to keep one deeper than that???

He never fishes that deep to much work. You don't have to go deep to go big.  Check out the takes from spear fishermen, they pull those toads in from the shallows.  Tom fishes structure that he knows and kelp beds, trolls when he needs to.
