Hey All, I am the newbie rookie here. Hitting Hogback this weekend with my son on our tandem. Any advice if we just want to hook some fish? I was bringing a rod for the wife/other kid and going to bait up some chicken livers for a possible catfish on the bank, but looking for any tips...

Thanks!

Have you ever been there?

In my mid twenties (35yr ago), I had a jet boat, used to drive it like a crazy man and drink on the water all day. (well maybe not that bad but you get the idea)

I launched at Hogback twice on summer weekends, the first time the craziness I saw really scared me. So a couple weekends later I went back, just confirmed what I saw the first time.  Never went back, or to any other popular ski areas in the delta for that matter.  Berry was safer.

On the upside the spectator value was something, musta been a million dollars worth of drag boats there (not an event, just a place to show off)

I hope it's not the same now, but with the way the world goes I can't imagine it's any better.

Be careful.

Have fun.

Hey Dale, never have been there....Any other recommendations? I am based in Folsom and want to take the family out for some kayak fishing with a nice shore to hang out at...

Are you launching from hogback? There are a lot of small mouth bass on the rip rap across from the docks.

Hi Bassnija, yes. Was going to park it there and have the wife and non fishing kid hang out on the shore/grass area, and we would launch and head anywhere that will produce. Will check out the dock area you mentioned. Just trying to hook up a few for my boy :)

I welcome any tips.

Crankbait will work. There are tules and use worms there. But cranking should produce.

I was there around April.  The combination of wind pushing upstream and the current made for some interesting fishing.  Seemed like a nice launch facility/park area though.  Be mindful of the current and you should be fine.

Have you thought about the Cosumnes River Preserve?  No boater worries and Q beautiful setting.  Fishy too.  It is on Franklin and Twin Cities Rd.  PM me if you want to launch on the Old Sac to troll for salmon.

Thanks Barefoot1!  I think I will try Consumnes next time...the boaters were the problem for sure today. Thanks for the tips. Would love to join you someday on a troll for Salmonoids! :)

Short report from today. Took my fam out and my boy out on the tandem in search of some fish. We got a few strikes but that was it. The main slough was very busy with jetskiers and boaters. Even crossing over to the other bank in search of smallies was a bit of a challenge with so much boat traffic. Will consider Consumnes next time....

Thanks for all the advice from people here!
