Great response and rescue guys!  I wondered if it was David?

I met David at the launch and told him to check out ncka.  He had the pontoons and a motor.  Really nice guy.  I would have loved to have fished and talked to him.  He was setting up when I arrived at hmb and then I launched before he got out.  Back at launch, no David.  That is worrisome. :smt009 and yet with this family of skilled kayakers it's less.   :smt006

It's comforting how via ncka, I can connect with people and events.

Nice work fellas!  Glad you held fast n told him to call it a day.

This will sound unsympathetic but what a worthless piece of dung that guy is.

Hopefully the fact that there was three of you impressed that POS the importance of team work and backup.

Doesnt sound unsympathetic but rather dickish and unnecessary. Is he really a POS because he didnt understand the consequences of going out into the pacific? He may have been ill informed an unprepared, but that doesn't make someone a POS. Makes a good candidate for ncka where people willingly help each other and safety is an encouraged topic. Personally, I think if a shop sells a kayak on the west coast, it should come with questions like"are you planning on paddling in the ocean". "Are you familiar with cold water immersion, hypothermia, and such". Any noob can make the mistake of looking out at monterey on a sunny day at kayakers, think that looks fun, go buy a costco special and hit the water. That doesnt reflect on the shittyness of someones character, but rather their lack of experience.  A lot of us made similar mistakes in the beginning.

On hindsight we should have asked him to check how much water went inside his hull before heading in.

Then pump it out since we all had our pumps, well he made back OK and just lost some gear.

First and foremost to my NCKA brothers fantastic job on quick level headed thinking saving a man in what appeared to be a really bad situation.

Labeling a POS, not where I would go with this myself.  We have all made mistakes in life, on and off the water. Drinking, getting drunk, and getting behind the wheel of a car with kids in the back seat, sure you earn that POS title.  Going out fishing and maybe not knowing the ropes, or over estimating your skill level, how many of us haven't done that at one point or time with something in our lives?  Can't say that made us a POS.  Will this guy be wiser because of it?  I hope so.

If this guy decides to become a member, and then reads that we think he is a POS or some other lurker or noob gets on the board and reads we all think they are POS's  then what does make us?  A bunch of arrogant pricks, which IMHO is not what we are about.  I think my brothers did the right thing, stuck by their guns got him in where it was safe, off the water , demo'd the correct stuff to have.  Its not like COSTCO has the stuff next to their boats saying going you need these items: blah, blah and blah.  If they did they may never sell those items.  Only through exposure to clubs like NCKA & NWKA have all of us gained a shorter learning curve to doing things safer, and being more responsible not just to each other but to the enviorment and others who come into the fold.

Okay I will get off my soap box.

glad too hear safe and educational rescue. being a newbee to the sport, I know some times we forget, or cannot afford all the proper gear one needs to be safe on the water.
P.S. Squidder K., has the same attitude that I myself believe-in.

It looks like in the pictures you were not very far from the rock jetty. Nice job! I was wondering if it would have been simpler for the dude to deal with it at the rocks. He is lucky you guy were there for sure.

I don't think he would've made it.  His breath had the smell of alcohol big time.

Having "blooped" reaching back for my game hook, I can empathize with the guy that went swimming. But, having 30+ years of ab diving in NorCal waters, being in the water wasn't a big deal. Embarrassing yes, but knowing how to untangle leashes, right my kayak, and get back on top (alone) made a big difference too. There was a NCKA member holding on to my kayak and offering support, for which I was grateful (but even more embarrassed).

Short story long, if you haven't practiced and perfected self-rescue in calm water, you shouldn't be out in the ocean. You pose a danger to not just yourself.

People just don't realize how deadly the ocean can be. It lulls you into a false sense of security, especially when it's calm.

Great work guys, I hope he got the message and does some practicing before he ventures out in the ocean again. Salamat!

That's terrible. Good for you Mel.  Darwin rules.  I saw two folks on a tandem paddling south of McNears yesterday. Warm day but with a south wind and an outgoing tide. No pfd's light clothing t-shirts. They would have been fucked if they capsized. About fifty yards offshore.
