Here, I'll save you the trouble.

I just read the vox article http://www.vox.com/2014/8/11/5991961/shark-week-is-once-again-making-things-up. The Discovery Channel lied to shark scientists to get them to appear on these fake documentaries. And then edited what the scientists said to fit the storyline.

there is some good clips mixed into some of the shows ..like the hammer head go pro clips...looked big to me and not something I would want near me in the open water..watched that episode last night till they were tagging/feeding the sharks...then it got too B.S to watch..maybe if i turn the commentary off

I saw a tip of a large Mola or thresher fin or ??? the other day---in super knarly swells saturday off pt pinos in 85 f.o.w--I then lost it in the swell ,then found it again, in a dip between swells 20 feet away ,to my back  right....I debated trying to go inspect it ,to calm my fears ,as I could only see the tip and it was for sure a FIN-and all that comes to mind with the tippy tip of fin close by and alone out there-
the swells were so close together and very very high ,so that changed my mind about adding any adventure detours, and I decided to paddle in due the 'FIN' and not being able over my shoulder to 100% I.D it....and here's where it got shitty for me,as I turned to time the swells and paddle back to the kelp a few hundred feet away, where there hopefully was no more finny  FIN!
it slowly turned with me, and between the swells, I could see it doing a 180* and get right in my trail /wake and now it was moving against the current ,like me ,keeping the gap the same as I moved away
So even though I was 90% sure it was a huge mola or another form of fish and not GWS,it still seemed to take an interest in my kayak.
I went home and google imaged Mola fins and thresher fins and both the below pictures look very much like the 'little bit of tip' I saw behind my kayak ,and not knowing how big a fin was attached underwater ,and seeing it turn with me, was terrifying for a bit-no shame in my game,I admit I was paddling and turning, and paddling and turning, to see if the FIN was still in trail - trying not to get tipped by rouge swells for sure now, which were worse thsan evber as I straight lined for the cove and took hits from the side, and  bad as it sounds I was shaking in my kayak from the fear&shock and could not control my shakes for good 3 minutes...after seeing it TURN with me ,that just totally blew my mind and jolted me ...true

thats my shark week---and it aint fake either  :smt002

I was watching an older shark week on netflix and the guy had gotten bumped and missed then was in the water as GWs was coming again...he used the words "absolute terror" and I was thinking that is kind of the primal fear and chemical releases that the human nervous system releases when these Apex predators are near us...be it a Grizzly -or a big Tiger or a GWS...

A pointed fin turning by me ,only the tapered top 2 inches sticking up was terrifying to me

At least you saw a fin. I kept having heart palpitations everytime a seal popped his head up out of the water or buzzed my fins.

Well at least I was still able to get in the water. If I see a shark I may have to sell my gear.

Not as bothered if I continue to not see them. I know they can and do ambush, but if they decide to its most likely to late.

It may be fear but more like paranoia and anxiety.  My wife says hers is fear because she will never enter the ocean and grew up on the coast.  I will still dive, but more aware of my surroundings.

Back when 'Shark Week' was born, they actually had educational stuff about sharks.  Now it's just a bunch of crap!
+1.  I used to enjoy learning things watching Discovery Channel's Shark Week, back when it was educational.  But now it seems whenever I happen to catch it, they're doing some stupid fake "documentary" and promoting all this fear-mongering for sharks.  It appears Discovery Channel has taken the same path as the History Channel: make up all this grandiose shit to attract viewers, then make people think it's real because it's featured on (what used to be) a "science" channel.  Just like how the History Channel posits the idea that aliens built the pyramids and that George Washington was actually an alien.

I can take some cheesy re-enactments and overacting, like on 'River Monsters', only because in 'River Monsters' they show some really cool and REAL fish.  But Shark Week's gone over the deep end with it all.

The funny strange is its more likely that a person would/could get taken out by someone texting and driving .... Somehow it just doesn't strike the fear as a shark attack ....
Yes the odds of dying or getting injured are way more likely in a car. I only feared cars in NY or Thailand where cars have the right away and I don't think they even see pedestrians.  Sort of like frogger.

I chose to run to seaside "the compass" on my lunch to get some tackle.
It is "car week" here now,so I rode my Kawasaki to work today to avoid the hour traffic jam I hit yesterday-even down by pt lobos/ HWY 1 it was backed up to a stop..
anyways I split lanes the whole way to seaside and back just now...no fear-no what if in my mind-just a calculated risk to get there and back and not sit in traffic ...and a keen eye on the other guy, backed by 30 years of riding...no issues this time

is it more dangerous to split lanes @ 25 mph ... than kayaking during Sharky months  in Monterey bay???...of course it is

But a  Shark fin near me in open water ,when all alone-to me- is terrifying....primal -chemical release - reptilian brain stem, fight or flight type stuff...the fear was through and through on a sighting very near me in a kayak....
the constant thought or the act of kayaking not at all compared to a real up close shock... a fin popping up....fuck that
