I am completely new to all of this . But would like to get into abalone diving then eventually spear fishing. Any help would be great. I live in the Central Valley but figure I'll have to go around Sac area, or else where

Thank you robert

Not sure where you plan on freediving first, but if it's mendo/Ft Bragg area http://www.subsurfaceprogression.com
would be a great place to start. You can rent some gear and buy later if you really love it.  I have seen some that bought a bunch of equipment and only used it once.  They have treated me great and I asked a lot of questions.

I think ft Bragg area. Would be a start. To be completely honest I do t have much of a clue in where to go. I might look at the rental route. But I could actually use the wet suit  even if abalone diving didn't work out

If you need it, they have it.
SUPER informative too.

Doesn't bother me if you buy or rent or shop close to where you live or where you are going to dive. Free diving and scuba have been great for me mentally and I am so happy I got into the sport. I would have kicked myself if I spent a lot an never used it. But if you are positive you will use it and want to learn to dive deep vs just hovering on top of the water looking for an easy pick.  I would invest in a dive class and some more freediving related gear that will help you get to your goals quicker.

I have been diving weekly more for excersise than fish or ab killing, but will take some if I need fresh seafood fir dinner.  I am in no way an expert but know enough to stay safe out there and would help you have a good first dive if you wanted someone to dive with. Just let me know when you can make it out to the Mendo coast.

Tote I'll give them a try maybe I can make it this weekend.

DG thank you for your info I will look into a free dive class. So I can learn tips  tricks and limits  .I free dive in our river for crawdads  and salvage stuff rafters loose , water temp is typically around 56 and I use a 4/3 oneal wetsuit and short stubby fins...cold. But manageable. I too find it very relaxing. But I haven't gone much in the last two years since my son was born. I ate abalone for the first time last year and that made me so excited to go get some myself.
