TON of bait in close, with whales breaching about, as my coworker and I launched at gray light out of Mitchell.  Stuff busting everywhere!  I got some cool video of a humpy breaching backlit with the sunrise from about 50 meters.

Picked up a couple small RF on 3" anchovy big hammer with 1/4 oz head.  Potholed it here and there.  Then, LIKE A COMPLETE PHOCKING DUMBASS, i went to check my email aaaaaaaaaaand in the drink went my iPhone 5.  PLOOP!  If any divers are interested, its about .4 mi north of Mitchell < 25 fow, along kelp bed periphery, with full battery as of 0700.  Sitting in a Lifeproof case rated to 2 m for 1 hour, with the headphone attachment.

Probably a better chance of finding Malaysia MH370 than my phone.  But if the case holds, I'm sure she'll be pingng away for the next 6-8 hours!!

PHOCCCCCKKKKKKK!!!!!  that's what I get for putzing around on my first trip of the year.  Concentrate concentrate CONCENTRATE on the task at hand!!!!!

oh, after that I picked up a half limit of RF, including one brown with decent shoulders.
So disgusted with myself . . .  :smt013

 hey, you can't eat a phone :smt002 y'know?

I'm just glad you got out, -  as the rest of the post sounds pretty good! I always liked that spot, I just hate the stair haul.

there's really no substitute for a shoulder-y fish pulling on your line!

+1

I don't fish, or haven't fished, but one other time in the last 18 months - that was my point!!  Rusty as hell, and distracted to boot.

I use my iphone for GPS, so I guess you could say, yes, the spot is marked.  Literally LOL.

I got a loaner IP5 until September when i'm eligible for the corporate upgrade.

And yes, the point of yakfishing is liberation, freedom, good eats . . .  all of which, I realized after the device went ploop.  expensive but valuable lesson, to get some realignment re OTW priorities

I tie a line of 10# to my life proof case. Have it attached to my Pfd. If I go over board my phone is still with me.

Part of my getting my yak ready is to put (wallet w license and phone in water proof box) inside kayak.  I don't need phone because I'm fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smt044 and mostly not catching.  Camera on cord around neck in pocket of shirt if pictures are needed, and since I have not caught anything worthwile, no pictures forthcoming. :smt013

Sorry to hear about your IP5.  Glad you got some OTW therapy.  Thanks for the report my friend.

Cheap insurance would be to get a Key float of sufficient size to keep phone in box afloat.  Or leash.
I have one for my camera, before my kayak gets wet, I attach the float.  I tested it in fresh water to make sure the float would float and not sink with weight of camera attached to it.
