Hello all, I'm guiding a sea-kayak trip in the Sea of Cortez Oct 20-25. Afterwards I'm going to fish all over the midriffs for Grouper, Barracuda, and yellowtail. This area is nicknamed 'the poormans Galapogos' because of the richness of sealife. It drops down to 3000 feet 10 miles off shore and deepwater upwellings bring the biggest whales and some of the best fishing in the entire BAJA P. You can catch fish at Bahia de Los Angeles (BOLA) that have yet to be identified, strange fish in those deep waters. Anyways I'm bringing a trailer of Malibu fishing kayaks with me and am going to set up a fishing Basecamp at Punta la Gringa for the week of Oct 25-30.  BOLA is an easy gorgeous drive from the border and the town though small and Quaint has everything a gringo fisherman would need. There are numerous Islands offshore within easy paddling distance that offer superb camping and access to individual fisheries. If you've never read Stienbecks "log of the sea of Cortez" It' a great inspirational primer for some worldclass adventure and fishing. Bay of LA is indeed a very cool spot to fish.  If I could I would go.

Most interested, being I know nothing of Baja, I've heard that it is the place that Kills the most kayakers. Sudden winds and Strong tide flows. Is there a support boat or have you done this enough times to know how to avoid these pittfalls....Danglin

Sounds like fun, but I can't make this trip. I've fished the pangas on the Gordo Banks, but a kayak trip would be the ultimate.

If you do it again, with a little bit of notice. I might make it.

It would be a hell of a trip and a great story, but not one I can make on this short a notice.  what is your experience with and how long have you fished and paddled in this area?
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

I would definatly like to emphasize that for novice kayakers BOLA can present risk beyond your skill and ability to deal with. Extreme Caution with wind especially westerlies which can blow for 5 days straight without let up. A competent well trained guide is worth every penny to have along, if he or she can fish all the better.
My experience is that of a Pro-Kayak guide and instructor. I'm certified By the ACA as an open coastal kayak instructor. I have a four star sea award from the British canoe union as well as a certified BCU kayak lifeguard. I'm certified as  guide by the Sea kayak Guides Alliance of BC. I'm trained in swiftwater rescue and Whitewater kayaking as well. I was a top Guide at Aqua-adventures in San diego for years where I lead numerous guided and solo trips to The Baja (always trolling a Line of course). I was schooled in kayak fishing in university of LA JOLLA by Sammons and his ilk. I run my own shop and business in Humboldt year round teaching and leading trips. I've seen things go bad on the water and have learned how best to avoid that. I really just like to kayak and fish 24/7, all those credentials just let me do it and get paid. I bring everyone back fat dumb and happy-No mishaps allowed! Tell your wives you'll be in good hands!

I've done two paddling trips there.  it is quite a spectacular place to paddle and fish.   The numerous islands make for weeks of exploring.    the winds can be quite dangerous, but for the most part they are in the afternoon.   we would generally be on the water for the sunrise, and at camp by noon.

this is one experience not to be missed!    unfortunately the local authorities try to impose a mandatory guide law for all kayak trips.

enjoy!

Sounds great Hawk and I am a BCU-trained kayaker. However, that's a bit of a commute for me, I am lacking funding (monetary and WAF both), and I cannot bring my Romany that far so I'll have to pass. I wish you the tight lines and wind at your back.

Marmot the drive is one of the best parts, It's so long and desolate That you feel like your driving off the end of the earth into fishing Valhalla! I understand the WAF factor though, if I wasnt working I wouldn't be going either. I'm doing the same trip again in late February. I'm trying to work in a side fishing trip everytime I go to BAJA now, so stay tuned to my web calendar.
