I don't get it.  How does a camera make anything secure?  I understand you would have photos, movies saved of the event happening, but it doesn't prevent the theft and it doesn't catch the guy unless someone can recognize him.

I seriously doubt anyone could make it home in time to catch the guy and I know the cops won't.  I have neighbors with alarms and all they do is make a lot of racket.  No cop has ever shown up in under 30 minutes, if they do at all.

Your neighbor was on the scene, took a photo and nothing happened.  How is a video security system going to top a live person taking a photograph?

Some thieves see cameras and move on and it is a deterrent. Others don't care about them but if you have them motion activated you can remote view the video when someone enters certain zones. If  they are casing the area you can keep an eye out for them or advise neighbors to look out.  If they actually break in video is great for prosecution, but work better with alarm systems. I wouldn't bother with an alarm unless it was monitored by a company or police.  Personally I like to see if shady people are around my house and make sure creepy neighbors or their friends stay away.  Police respond quicker if it is confirmed that someone is inside.  Especially if you can give them a play by play while monitoring the video.

Well with that logic why even bother locking your door. In reality being home or posting a security guard you are not going to STOP them. But as DG said cameras, barking dog, locks all tell the dude this house is more work and they may move to a simpler target.  Now having a pic may help with prosecution AND in my example if my neighbor didn't snap a pick I'd have no clue that this dude was around. I posted this incident to my neighbors and I have had 20 ppl say. Thanks, we will be on alert. That prob more useful then calling the cops.

Either one of these should do the trick:

Locking a door slows down a thief and will probably require a lot of noise to get past.  As your neighbor's camera shows, thieves try to get in and out unnoticed by anyone in the immediate area.  A camera doesn't do any of that.  A hood or hat while wearing baggy black clothing is going to obscure their features on a camera.  I would guess the amateur criminal might skip a house with cameras or even an alarm company sign, but the tweaker or pro is going to be in and out so fast, a camera isn't going to be much deterrent. Perhaps one of the cameras positioned to where it might catch their license plate or some other way to identify who they might be?

I've considered putting a self closing door on my large walk-in bedroom closet.  Then a self latching lock.  Crook walks into the closet and the door shuts behind him, locking him in.  Rig the lock to the light switch so he's in the dark.  A night vision camera in that closet would be 'entertaining'.

It would be funny but it's False Imprisonment.  That's a felony, right up there with kidnapping or taking hostages.

I lost my security a few years ago. A 100+ pound Rott. She was great would not bite anyone she loved all people. But if someone came to the gate she put on such a show even if she knew the person. Now I have 2 boxers one hardly barks. but the other one makes up for it. I also have a monitored security system. I do have cameras but they are NIB as well.
Then there are the 9mm and shot gun. among some other things. After writing this maybe I need something else.  :smt009

that guy needs a job, maybe stealing isn't paying off... maybe secretly wire a electrical shock system to the handle and have a on/off switch located only where you know. Record all this and post the vid for our amusement... he's probably gonna try and come back.

Dont you live in a cul de sac? I wouldn't think anyone would try sneaking around when your that visible. Dont know know much about the security systems... but do know that Comcast says it has all those features and more.  Just for 30$ a month though...

Behind a fence with a large barking dog = 100 cameras... My beagle keeps everything strait.... He doesn't bite... he barks only... Most will go to a house with NO dog and Won't look to see what size dog it is... Good luck... He will be back. Post a sign letting him know he was seen and give the picture to Police...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Kinda surprised he would case your house, especially since it's near the end of a culdasac. Perhaps he wasn't looking for access into your house, and was trying to get into your trailer...or see if he could tow it away later.
Notifying your neighbors is the smartest thing to do.
